– SIMON
I woke to find Jamie’s side of the bed empty.
For a few seconds, I stared at the ceiling, listening to the ocean and trying to decide whether last night’s argument had been as bad as it felt. She’d slept beside me, but she hadn’t wedged her freezing foot between my legs the way she always did. When I’d tried to pull her close, she’d murmured that she was tired.
I got up, pulled on a pair of shorts, and headed downstairs. The patio door stood open, and I could hear her talking on the phone.
Jamie leaned against the doorframe in one of my dress shirts, the hem brushing the middle of her thighs. She was talking to someone from the office and tapping notes into her phone. Beside the pool, Hernández crouched over a piece of the filtration system.
I stopped before either of them noticed me. Not because I’d come down to spy on her, but because the man looked up when Jamie shifted her weight. His eyes lingered on her legs before returning to the equipment.
Wonderful. I’d bought an entire island, and apparently it came with a caretaker who thought checking out my wife’s legs was one of the perks.
“Morning,” I said, stepping onto the patio.
Jamie turned toward me.
“Hey. Give me a second.”
I waited while she finished the call. Hernández stood immediately.
“Mr. Hart. I’m checking a problem with the pool’s circulation system. Mrs. Hart let me in.”
“I see. Thank you.”
I looked at Jamie.
“Can you come upstairs for a minute?”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”
“I need to talk to you.”
“You can talk to me here. I’m supervising Hernández.”
My jaw tightened. I wasn’t about to argue with her in front of an employee.
“Then go up to the bedroom. I’ll keep an eye on him. You don’t need to stay out here keeping another man

Jamie stared at me, picking up on my irritation immediately. Then she murmured, quietly enough that only I could hear, “Now I’m staying. Just to piss you off.”
I took a deep breath. Then another. Neither did a damn thing.
Hernández put his tool away and stepped closer to the edge of the pool.
“Mrs. Hart, the filter’s working now. I’ll check the outside valve and come back if there’s a problem.”
“Thank you, Rafael,” Jamie said.
He nodded to me and left. I waited until I could no longer hear his footsteps.
“You didn’t have to let him in while you were alone,” I said.
“Let who in, Simon? The caretaker?”
“He could’ve waited.”
“Simon, he called on the intercom, told me what was wrong, and I let him in. That’s all.”
“And you had to stand out here dressed like that?”
Her expression changed.
“Like what, Simon? I’m wearing your shirt. Or did you forget I don’t have anything else to wear?”
“Jamie.”
“No. Finish that thought.”
I dragged a hand through my hair.
