– SIMON
“I’m swimming. What does it look like?” Her voice was sharp, her eyes blazing. “Or do you think I need your permission for that, too?”
Water streamed down her body, her hair plastered to her face, and even furious, she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. The sun caught her back, and I had to make a conscious effort to keep my eyes on her face.
“Like that?” My voice came out rougher than I’d intended. “Trying to get the caretaker’s attention?”
She laughed.
“Simon, we’re on a deserted island. The caretaker said he only comes by in the morning, and he lives on the other side of the island. He’s not here. Nobody’s here. It’s just us.”
“So you two talked?” The question slipped out before I could stop it.
She lifted her chin in a gesture I knew all too well. Defiant. Letting me know she had no intention of backing down.
“Of course we talked. I can speak, you know. There’s nothing wrong with that.” She stepped toward me, water still dripping from her body. “You married me, Simon. So tell me something. Do you trust me or not?”
The question hit me square in the chest. I stared at her for a long moment, my heart pounding against my
ribs.
“I trust you.” My voice was low. “It’s that fucking caretaker I don’t trust.”
“Simon…”
“I saw the way he looked at your legs when you weren’t paying attention.” My jaw tightened at the memory. “I’m a man, Jamie. I know the difference between a passing glance and a guy checking you out.”
She went still. Some of the defiance left her posture, and for a moment, she seemed willing to hear me out.
“Are you sure you didn’t misread it?”
“Positive.”
She was quiet for a moment. Then something shifted in her face. The anger faded, leaving something more vulnerable in its place.
“I… I’m sorry.” Her voice was soft, barely above a whisper. “I didn’t know. I just… I don’t want to lose my freedom.” She took a step toward me. “But if you’re telling me he was looking at me like that, I believe you, baby. I trust you.”
I stepped back on instinct. She stopped.

Fuck. I was still angry, but staying that way was hard when she let her guard down and looked at me with those soft eyes. When she called me baby in that voice that always did me in.
Jamie took another step. This time, I stayed where I was.
She looped her arms around my neck and rose onto her toes. Her lips brushed my skin just below my ear. Then came another kiss, a little slower, followed by a third at the curve of my neck.
I let out a slow breath.
That woman knew exactly what she was doing.
“Will you forgive me, baby?” she whispered against my skin, pressing another kiss there.
