The driver slowed as we turned onto the tree-lined street. I recognized the stone facades, narrow front steps, and discreet gate before the car even stopped.
“Simon…”
He squeezed my hand.
“I know.”
It was the townhouse he’d shown me months ago.
The driver pulled into the private garage. Simon got out first, checked the entrance, then came around to open my door. I took his hand..
“You don’t have to check every shadow,” I murmured.
“Yes, I do. Can’t be too careful.”
He kissed my forehead as though that settled the matter.
We went in through the interior door. The house was ready for us. A pale sofa faced a marble fireplace, flanked by brown leather armchairs. An antique dark-wood table and modern lighting worked surprisingly well with the original architectural details. Fresh flowers sat on the console table. In the dining room, upholstered chairs surrounded a long table beneath a contemporary chandelier.
“You furnished the entire house?” I asked, stunned.
“You were so busy with work and wedding planning that I forgot to mention it. I hired an architect to handle everything. Told him to keep the house’s classic character without sacrificing comfort or technology.” He glanced around. “I have to admit, it turned out better than I expected.”
“Simon, it’s gorgeous. I love it!”
“Good, sweetheart. But if there’s anything you don’t like, we’ll change it. We can even bring in someone else if you want.”
“Don’t be ridiculous!” I laughed, wrapping my arms around his waist. “It’s perfect.”
He pulled me closer and kissed my forehead.
“When I bought this place, I pictured us coming home here after the wedding,” he admitted. “Not hiding from reporters.”
He gave me a quick, warm kiss. I slipped off my coat and wandered off to look around again. A few minutes later, the doorbell rang.

Simon checked the security monitor before opening the door. My mother arrived with all three kids and an enormous bag, especially considering how quickly they’d had to leave.
“Jamie!”
Lily reached me first. The other two came barreling after her in a tangle of arms and excited voices that nearly knocked me over.
“Miss Jamie!” one of the kids shouted, hugging my legs.
“Uncle Simon!” Lily held up her arms.
Simon scooped her up without a second’s hesitation. The smile that spread across his face made my chest ache.
“So, have you three been behaving?” he asked.
“Kind of,” Lily answered solemnly.
“Appreciate the honesty.”
My mother reached over the little heads to hug me.
“Oh my God, honey. I saw the footage. Are you two okay?”
“We’re okay, Mom.”
Chloe slipped in behind them, almost unnoticed, clutching a small backpack and wearing a shy smile.
“Sorry. I didn’t want to interrupt the reunion.”
“You’re not interrupting,” I assured her.
She smiled, though I noticed her gaze travel around the living room before settling on my ring.
While Jack and Sam explored the house, Mom filled me in on the past few days. For one brief moment, despite everything going on, I felt like we were home.
Simon set Lily down and turned to my mother.
“I’d already been getting this place ready for us to move into after the wedding. Fortunately, we can use it
now.”
Mom looked around, impressed.
“It’s beautiful, Simon.”
“I want everyone to make themselves at home,” Simon said, his expression turning serious. “But I need to ask you something, Mrs. Collins. Nobody can know we’re here. Not friends, not even people you trust. If the press finds out where we are, our safety could be compromised. So I need absolute discretion. Understood?”

“Of course,” Mom said immediately. “I won’t say a word.”
