CHAPTER 185
– JAMIE
Hours later, the city greeted us with endless traffic, blaring horns, and brightly lit buildings.
I was exhausted.

After so many days of waking to the sound of the ocean, it felt strange to hear traffic again and see people hurrying along the sidewalks.
We were in the back seat of the car, a few blocks from Simon’s apartment. He’d spent most of the drive answering messages that had piled up while we were away.
I leaned against his shoulder, seriously considering taking a shower and sleeping for twelve hours straight.
“We have to pick up the kids tomorrow,” I murmured.
“I know, baby.”
“I miss them so much.”
“Me, too.”
I smiled.
“I bet your mom’s counting the minutes until she can give all three back,” he said.
I laughed.
“She’s not like that. She’s probably loved having them.”
That was when his phone rang.
Chloe’s name appeared on the screen.
“It’s Chloe,” he said.
Simon answered and put her on speaker.
“Hey, Chloe.”
“Simon! Thank God. Where are you?”
The urgency in her voice made me sit up immediately.
Simon heard it, too.
“Almost at the apartment. Why?”

There was a pause.
“You can’t come here.”
I frowned.
Simon took his arm from around my waist.
“What do you mean, we can’t come there?”
“Simon, I’m serious. You need to turn around. Right now.”
“Chloe, what happened?”
I heard voices in the background, as though she were talking to someone else.

“I don’t know how, but they found your address, Mr. Hart. There’s a crowd surrounding the building.”
My stomach tightened.
“A crowd?” I repeated. She seemed to hear me.
“Protesters, Jamie. A lot of them. They’ve been here for hours. The police have been called, but things are getting out of hand.”
Simon leaned forward.
“How long has this been going on?”
“Since late this afternoon. At first, it was a few dozen people, but more kept showing up. They’re sharing the address on social media.”
“Because of Vérité?” I asked.
“Yes. They want answers about the scandal. There are reporters, cameras, people shouting… Simon, you cannot show up here.”
I looked at my husband.
Every trace of the ease he’d worn a few minutes earlier was gone.
“Why wasn’t I told sooner?” he asked, his voice dangerously calm.
“I tried calling! Your phone was off during the flight. I’ve spoken to Elizabeth and building security. We’re trying to get this under control.”
Simon looked out the window.
“Shit.”
We traveled a little farther before the car turned a corner.
