CHAPTER 62
AMIE

Morning light cut through the thin curtains in my room, and the first thing I registered was the weight of Simon’s arm hooked around my waist.
I took a deep breath. My nose was still stuffed up, but the fever had broken overnight. I turned slowly to face him-he was still asleep, his features relaxed, dark hair a mess against the pillow. He looked younger when he slept. Less arrogant. Less… Simon.
For a second, I let myself think about last night.
After forcing me to rest in bed, he’d stayed. Not just stayed-he’d held me, kept me warm, taken care of me like I was actually his fiancée. And when I’d finally drifted off, he was still there, arms solid around me, breath warm against the back of my neck.
He’d slept here all night.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand, and the sound made Simon stir beside me. He muttered something unintelligible, burying his face in my hair, and I felt that tightness in my chest again-the one I refused to
examine.
The phone buzzed again.
He grunted, eyes still closed. “Answer it.”
“It’s yours.”
He groaned, reaching for it with one lazy hand. Swiped to answer, pressed it to his ear. “Simon Hart.”
He listened for a moment, and I watched his expression shift-sleepiness evaporating, replaced by something sharper.
“Lily?” His voice was calmer now. “Breathe. Slow down. What happened?”
I sat up, heart kicking.
Simon went quiet for a long beat, listening to the little girl’s trembling voice. Then his eyes found mine.
“Abby fell. She’s bleeding.” He was already up, yanking his pants on one-handed. “She’s not waking up.”
“What?”
“Let’s go.” He tossed me a sweatshirt. “Put this on. Now.”
I didn’t question it. I jumped out of bed and pulled the sweatshirt over my head while Simon was already in the hallway, keys in hand.
I followed him, grabbing my phone on the way.
Dialed 911.

“911, what’s the address of the emergency?”
pened my mouth-and froze.
I didn’t know.
Simon looked at me for half a second, read it on my face, and took the phone from my hand. With the other, he scrolled through an old conversation, found the address Abby had sent him a few days ago.
Then he rattled it off to the operator, fast and precise.
“An ambulance is already on its way,” she confirmed.
Simon handed the phone back to me and got in the car.
The drive to Abby’s place was a blur of streets, headlights, and stoplights. Simon drove in silence, jaw tight, knuckles white around the steering wheel.
When we got there, the front door was open.
Lily was standing in the middle of the living room, face streaked with tears, phone still in her hand. Jack and Sam were behind her, eyes wide, small bodies shaking like leaves in the wind.
And then I saw Abby.
She was lying on the floor near the staircase, head tilted at the wrong angle, a pool of red spreading slowly across the hardwood. Her eyes were closed, her face too pale, and for a moment-just a moment-I thought she was dead.
“Abby!” Simon dropped to his knees beside her, hands hovering over her still body. “Abby, can you hear me? Abby!”
I knelt beside the kids, opening my arms, and they crashed into me like I was the only anchor in a storm. Lily was trembling, Sam sobbing against my shoulder, and Jack-the oldest, the one who always tried to be strong-had tears in his eyes, his body rigid as a drawn string.
“What happened?” Simon asked, his voice strained. “Jack, tell me what happened.”
“My mom-she was changing the lightbulb,” Jack managed, voice shaky. “She went up on the ladder and the ladder slipped. She fell, and her head hit the floor and she wouldn’t wake up, and I tried to wake her but she wouldn’t-she wouldn’t-”
“Hey.” I grabbed his face, forced him to look at me. “Your mom’s going to be okay.”
“How do you know?” He asked, voice cracking.
“Because she has to be,” I said. “She’s got you three. She’s not giving up that easy.”
The words were hollow, I knew that. But they were the only ones I had.
The siren cut through the air, and seconds later, the paramedics stormed in. They worked fast, stabilizing Abby, strapping her to a gurney, their voices a blur of medical terms I couldn’t process.
“I’m going with her,” Simon said. “Jamie, can you stay with the kids?”

He tossed me his car keys, and I caught them mid-air.
eah: Go,” I said. “I’m right behind you.”
