CHAPTER 63
AMIE
The hospital waiting room was packed. The kids pressed against me, quiet and scared.
All we could do was wait.
“Is she going to wake up?” Lily asked, voice tiny.
“Yeah,” I said. “She just needs to rest a little, sweetheart. The doctors are going to fix her up
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.”
I wasn’t. But Lily needed to hear it. Sam too. Even Jack, who was trying so hard to be strong, needed to
hear it.
Then an older woman walked into the reception area, eyes wide, face pale.
“Abigail Lancaster,” she said to the receptionist. “I’m her mother. Where is my daughter?”
The kids turned at the same time.
“GRANDMA!”
They ran toward her, and she dropped to her knees to catch them, arms wrapping around the three small bodies like she could shield them from the world.
“Who are you?” the woman asked, her eyes finding mine.
“Jamie,” I introduced myself. “I’m the-”
“She’s the girlfriend of Mom’s friend,” Lily said, voice still trembling. “Simon. The one who brought the pony.”
“Oh, Simon.” The woman nodded, something bitter flickering in her eyes. “He called me. I was in the next town over, and he said Abby had fallen. I came as soon as I heard.” She squeezed the kids tighter. “Where is he? How is my daughter?”
“I don’t know, I-”
Then Simon appeared.
He was walking toward us with long strides, a doctor beside him.
“Mrs. Lancaster,” he called.
Abby’s mother turned so fast she almost lost her balance.
“Where is my daughter? What happened? Is she going to be okay?”

The doctor looked at the kids, then at me, and I got the message immediately.
Some on, guys I knelt in front of them. “How about we take a walk out to the terrace? There’s a nice view up there.”
“I don’t want to,” Lily protested.
“It’ll be quick. Just a few minutes.”
Jack looked at his grandmother, then at me. Something in his eyes told me he knew. That he understood more than he should.
“Let’s go,” he said quietly, taking Lily’s hand. “Let’s go with Jamie.”
I pulled the three of them away from there, my footsteps echoing in the empty hallway. As we walked, I heard the doctor say:
“Your daughter has suffered a severe head injury. We’re keeping her in a medically induced coma to reduce brain swelling. At this point, we can’t say for certain how much she’ll recover.”
Abby’s mother seemed to collapse. Her legs gave out, and Simon caught her, guiding her to a nearby chair.
“She’s strong,” I heard him say. “She’ll fight.”
My throat tightened. I turned my face away and focused on the kids.
We went out to the terrace, where the kids got distracted by a swing set.
A few minutes later, Simon appeared.
He looked calm, but I knew the tension in his shoulders and the set of his jaw. Something was wrong.
My chest squeezed.
Simon knelt in front of the kids.
“Hey, guys. Your grandma’s going to stay here with your mom for a few days. And you’re going to stay with me, okay?”
Jack swallowed hard. “Is Mom going to be okay?”
“Of course she is.”
“Are you going to stay with us?” Sam asked.
“For as long as you need.”
Lily’s lip trembled. “When is she going to wake up?”
Simon pulled her into his arms. “Soon, little one. She just needs some time.”
Sam and Jack joined the hug, and for a moment, Simon just stood there, in the middle of the hospital, holding three scared kids like they were his own.
