CHAPTER 95
AMIE
Morning light filtered through the penthouse curtains and I woke up with the familiar weight of his arm around my waist.
For a moment, I stayed completely still, feeling the heat of his body against my back. The slow. steady rhythm of his breathing against my neck. The way our bodies fit together perfectly, like they were made for it.
Shit.
The night before, he’d sworn he’d behave. “I’m just going to sleep, Jamie. Word of honor.” And I. idiot that I am, believed him.
I woke up in the middle of the night with his body pressed against mine, his arm tight around my waist, and something hard and unmistakable against my back. I felt desire climb up my spine like fire, and when I moved, he woke up too.
“Couldn’t help it,” he whispered against my ear, voice rough with sleep. “You keep moving.”
“You’re the one holding me.”
And then he turned me on my side and took me slowly, from behind, with a slowness that made me bite the pillow to stay quiet. Every thrust was deeper than the last, and he whispered things in my ear that made me tremble.
After, we slept again, tangled up like two cats.
And now, here I was, awake, with his arm still around me and his scent soaked into my skin.
“You’re thinking too loud,” his voice came from behind me, rough and drowsy.
I closed my eyes. “I’m not thinking about anything.”
“You’re such a bad liar. Tell me. Why are you tense?”
He pulled me closer, and I felt his lips graze my shoulder.
“Simon, the kids-”
1 “Are asleep. I checked at six.”
“You checked?”
“Figured we could take advantage.”
I turned my head to look at him, and immediately regretted it. He was even more beautiful in the morning messy hair, blue eyes still heavy with sleep, expression relaxed like I’d never seen it.
“I can’t stand you, you know that?” I murmured.

“And you’re in my bed.”
olled my eyes, but couldn’t stop the smile that escaped my lips.
A knock on the door made us freeze.
“Uncle Simon?” Lily’s voice came from the hallway. “Are you awake?”
Simon sighed and pulled away from me, tugging the sheet up to his waist.
“I am, sweetheart. I’ll be down in a minute.”
“Is Miss Jamie in there?”
I looked at him in panic, and Simon just smiled.
“She is. We’ll come down for breakfast.”
I came downstairs fifteen minutes later, already dressed in one of Simon’s t-shirts and a pair of sweatpants I’d found in the closet. The smell of coffee and pancakes filled the air, and the kids were already at the table, eating with their usual chaotic energy.
“Good morning, Miss Jamie!” Sam yelled, mouth full.
“Sam, don’t talk with your mouth full,” Jack corrected, in a tone that was scarily similar to Simon’s.
“Sorry.”
Simon was in the kitchen, back to us, moving something around in a pan. He was wearing nothing but gray sweatpants and a white t-shirt, and he still managed to look like the most elegant man in the city.
“Sit,” he said, without turning around. “Coffee’s ready.”
I sat at the table, and Lily immediately dragged her chair over to sit next to me.
“Are you staying all day?” she asked.
“No, sweetheart. I have to work.”
“But it’s Saturday!”
“Lawyers work on Saturdays sometimes.”
\ “That’s boring.”
“I agree.”
Simon brought over a stack of pancakes and set it in the middle of the table, then sat down at the other end. His eyes found mine for a second – just one – and something passed between us.
A flash of the night before. The way he looked at me when we were together. What he whispered in my
ear.
I looked away quickly.

“Uncle Simon,” Jack called, holding his fork. “Have you ever thought about having kids with Miss Jamie?”
Simon choked on his coffee.
“What?”
“Kids. You like kids. I think you’d be a good dad.”
“Jack, eat your pancake.”
Sam laughed. “Uncle Simon’s embarrassed!”
“I’m not embarrassed.”
“You are too. Your ear turned red.”
I looked at Simon, and sure enough, his ears were pink. I couldn’t help it – I started laughing.
“Let’s talk about something else,” he said, changing the subject. “Who wants to go to the park today?”
“ME!” Lily raised her hand.
“ME TOO!” Sam jumped out of his chair.
“What about you, Jamie?” Simon looked at me. “Come with us?”
“Like I said, I have some stuff to handle at the office.”
“Do you really have to go?”
I opened my mouth to answer, but my phone buzzed on the table.
Mom.
I stared at the screen for a moment, hesitating. After last night, after everything I’d said, I didn’t know what
to expect.
“Answer it,” Simon said, his voice softer. “Could be important.”
I took a deep breath and swiped the screen.
“Hi, Mom.”
\”Jamie.” Her voice was strange. Low. Shaky. “Jamie, I need to tell you something.”
My heart stopped.
“What happened?”
“It’s Vanessa.” A pause. “She lost the baby.”
The world tilted.
“What?”

“Last night. After you left, she went home. She started having pains, and Oliver took her to the hospital, but…” My mother’s voice broke. “She bled a lot, they did a delivery, but the baby didn’t make it, Jamie. She
almost eight months.”
The phone slipped from my hand and hit the table with a dull thud.
“Jamie?” Simon was on his feet immediately. “What happened?”
“I…” My voice came out strange. Distant. “Vanessa lost the baby.”
The silence that followed was absolute.
The kids stopped eating. Simon went completely still.
“Last night,” I continued, the words coming out before I could control them. “After I left. After everything I
said.”
“Jamie-”
“I said those things to her. I told her Oliver was going to cheat on her. I humiliated her in front of the whole family.” I whispered, my voice shaking.
I grabbed my phone from the table and stood up.
“I need a minute.”
I walked across the room toward the terrace, feeling Simon’s eyes on my back. The glass door closed behind me, and the cold morning air hit my face.
I didn’t cry. Couldn’t. I just stood there, leaning against the railing, looking down at the city, and felt something twist in my chest.
Guilt.
It was guilt.
I didn’t do anything. I didn’t push her. I didn’t hurt her. But the words I said… the things I threw in her face…
What if the stress of that argument caused this? What if I was responsible?
The terrace door opened.
“Jamie.”
I didn’t turn around.
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not fine.”
His footsteps got closer until I felt the heat of his body behind me. He didn’t touch me. Just stood there, close enough that I knew he was there.

wasn’t.”
“Simon, you don’t understand-”
“I understand perfectly.” His voice was firm, but gentle. “You told some truths to a person who crossed every line. Didn’t you say she made up things about you being my mistress? What were you supposed to do? Stay quiet? No, Jamie. No. That doesn’t make you responsible for her losing a baby.”
