Seeing her husband lower his head silently, Noelle felt a sharp pang in her chest. She stepped closer and gently took his hand. “Honey, don’t listen to them. Back then, you and your parents were victims. The ones we should hate, the ones who deserve revenge, are the people who truly hurt you.”
“I know,” Sebastian replied, looking at her. His voice softened. “I’ve never blamed my parents. It’s just
it hurts when I see that kid who used to follow me everywhere now treating me like an enemy.”
…
His eyes flicked to Theodore, still unconscious on the bed. “How long before Grandpa wakes up?”
“About half an hour. Hard to say.”
“Then let’s stay with him a bit longer.”
Sebastian stayed quietly by the bed.
He hadn’t really looked at his grandfather in over ten years.
In his memories, Theodore had always been strict. He didn’t like Sebastian’s mother much, so he’d never been particularly warm to Sebastian either.
But as a child, Sebastian had been lively and fearless. He’d cling to Theodore, teasing and pestering him, often coaxing a rare laugh from that stern face.
Back then, he’d even drag Ethan along to secretly pluck a few of Theodore’s beard hairs.
Their parents would be furious and try to discipline them, but Theodore always shielded them and barked, “Let me see who dares touch my grandsons!”
The two kids would hide behind him, pulling faces in triumph.
It felt like a lifetime ago, though it had only been a little over ten years.
About 20 minutes later, worried that it might be awkward if Theodore woke up and saw him, Sebastian quietly left the room with Noelle.
The moment the door closed, Theodore, who’d been lying still, slowly opened his eyes.
In truth, he’d already woken up earlier.
He just hadn’t opened his eyes.

Ethan got straight to the point with Royce and Olivia, asking if they’d switched Theodore’s medicine.
Olivia’s guilt made her raise her voice defensively. “I did it for your own good! That Noelle is Sebastian’s wife. She’ll fight for the inheritance for him! How could we trust them? So I swapped the meds. I even got them from an expert. That’s top–notch stuff! If your grandpa got better after taking our medicine, he’d value you more, and then the inheritance would be yours!”
Royce added grimly, “Ethan, your aunt may have acted rashly, but she did it for
your sake.”
Ethan stared at them, who were speaking with absolute conviction. There was no remorse or shame on their faces–only panic at being exposed and shameless justification.
“For my sake?” His voice dropped low, hoarse and almost broken. “Your so–called ‘for my sake‘ nearly killed Grandpa!”
Olivia flinched under his glare. Her voice weakened, but she still forced herself to argue. “It- it was an accident! Who knew that the expert’s medicine would be useless? And besides, you can’t just believe that woman! She says my medicine made your grandpa worse? I can also say her treatment messed him up first! I could go after her for that!
“Ethan, we just wanted to help you! Why should Sebastian come back and fight for the inheritance? We’re your family!”
“Family?” Ethan repeated, bitter and mocking. “You mean a family who claims to act ‘for my own good‘ while risking my grandpa’s life and making me look ungrateful?”
