They went home together. When Helen saw Kevin, she couldn’t help showing off. “Kevin, look! Noelle bought all this for me! I can start school next week!”

Kevin looked at Noelle and spoke quietly. “Ms. Kain, thank you.”

In that moment, something quietly melted in the eyes of the boy who was always cold and guarded.

Sebastian stood with his back to the kitchen door. The counter was scattered with ingredients and tools.

His tall frame looked a little awkward in the kitchen. Hands that usually controlled everything with ease were now clumsily working a small lump of candy.

Noelle leaned against the doorframe and watched him quietly for a moment.

His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, exposing firm forearms dusted with a bit of flour.

On the counter were several small dishes filled with chopped walnuts, pine nuts, and orange- blossom filling. Beside them lay a few misshapen but barely formed stuffed chewy candies. They were translucent, the fillings faintly visible inside, pressed with leaf–shaped patterns.

Noelle watched like this, the corners of her lips lifting without her noticing. Something in her heart softened. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Sebastian’s waist from behind.

“Honey.”

Sebastian was too focused to notice her approach. Feeling her soft body, his back stiffened, his ears faintly turning red.

“You’re back?” His voice was low. “Is Helen’s situation settled?”

Noelle rested her head on his shoulder. “Yeah, it settled.”

Her voice carried a smile. She rubbed her cheek lightly against his broad back, like a spoiled cat. “Mr. Munoz saw her test papers and agreed to admit her right away. He even said her tuition could be reduced.”

She felt the muscles in his back tense for a split second, then slowly relax. This man was still as shy as ever.

He didn’t turn around. He just stopped what he was doing and let her hold him.

“The people you take in are all very smart,” Sebatian said quietly, his voice carrying a trace of tenderness.

“Of course,” Noelle closed her eyes, breathing in his clean, cool scent mixed with sweetness. “I’m smart, so of course the people I choose are art too. What flavors are you making?”

“Walnut and pine nut,” Sebastian paused. “And the orange–blossom filling you said you wanted to try last time.”

“Can I taste it?” She let go of his waist and moved to his side.

“Okay.”

Sebastian picked up a freshly shaped stuffed chewy candy and brought it to her lips.
