“I hear you train with Mrs. Menzie every day, and yet here you are, too scared to even fight me. With skills like that, do you really think you can make the main unit?”

Braxton was a member of the main unit, and he was Rachel’s suitor. He’d always had a secret crush on her. When Rachel got kicked out of headquarters because of Noelle, he hated Noelle, but he didn’t dare confront her directly. Instead, he went after Elliot.

After all, Elliot and Eden were Noelle’s closest people at headquarters.

Elliot’s face darkened. He clenched his jaw and said nothing.

That silence only made Braxton smirk wider. “Hah, coward! Fine. You can back down. Drop to your knees now. Take a detour whenever you see me. If you do that, I’ll let you go.”

The insult hit hard.

Elliot’s fists clenched tightly. Anger burned in his eyes as he stepped forward.

“Elliot!” Eden shouted, grabbing him in a panic.

Braxton watched with smug satisfaction. He was baiting Elliot on purpose, trying to get him to throw the first punch.

Elliot couldn’t handle him. If he threw a punch, Braxton could “accidentally” take him down. Even if Noelle asked later, he could claim it was just a friendly spar gone wrong. Headquarters rules wouldn’t touch him.

The insults were too much. The people around were annoyed, but Braxton was strong and in the main unit. Nobody dared step in for Elliot.

“Braxton, cut it out.” Someone tried to intervene and persuade. “Elliot is with Mrs. Menzie-”

“So what if he’s with Mrs. Menzie? That doesn’t change the fact he’s a coward! A total weakling! Elliot, you can’t get into the main unit on your own, so you decide to cling to a woman’s coattails? Mrs. Menzie is just Mr. Menzie’s wife. Do you think she can help you?”

The crowd couldn’t take it anymore.

“Braxton, you’re way out of line-”

Someone else spoke up for Elliot, but a colder, sharper voice cut in from behind. “Big talk.”

Everyone turned instinctively. Noelle and Helen were walking up, and people quickly stepped aside, calling out respectfully. Noelle moved straight ahead, expressionless, while Helen kept pace beside her.

“Mrs. Menzie…” Eden spotted her and called out.

Elliot’s anger had been boiling, but when he saw Noelle, he froze for a second. Then, he unclenched his fists and lowered his head.

Noelle’s eyes scanned the crowd and landed on Braxton.

His face tensed. He hadn’t expected her to show, but he raised his chin and met her stare.

He hadn’t done anything wrong. He wasn’t worried she’d tell Sebastian.

“When did main unit members get so idle that they boss people around on the reserve training ground?” Noelle’s voice wasn’t loud, but the entire noisy area went silent.

Braxton flickered with panic for a moment, then shoved it down with arrogance. “Mrs. Menzie, we’re just sparring. It’s normal. Your guy is just too timid.”

“Timid?” Noelle repeated, her lips curving slightly. “How are you going to compete?”

Braxton’s eyes lit up, as if the trap had sprung. “Simple! Let’s fight straight–up fairly! Hand–to–hand. Whoever’s left standing in the ring wins!”

The crowd almost scolded him.

Braxton was too shameless.

Everyone knew his hand–to–hand skills were top–tier in the main unit.

Elliot didn’t stand a chance.

Braxton never wanted a real fight. He just wanted to humiliate Elliot.

Eden couldn’t hold back, his neck flushing. “You really think that’s fair? Why not compete in marksmanship instead? Why pick hand–to–hand–the one you’re best at?”

It was obvious. Elliot was better with guns, but Braxton wasn’t.

Braxton picked the fight that favored him. That was totally unfair.

“Exactly. The person who accepts the challenge should get to choose the field!” one of Elliot’s friends shouted. “Elliot, fight him with guns!”

“Hand–to–hand is fine,” Noelle said, calm and flat.

Eden’s jaw tightened. He shot her a look. “Mrs. Menziel”

Elliot couldn’t beat Braxton in a fight. Eden tried desperately to signal her.

The ones who’d supported Elliot were hinting at her like crazy, eyes practically crossed.

But Noelle didn’t glance at them. She looked at Braxton and asked evenly, “What’s the stake?”

The crowd’s reactions had Braxton cornered. He didn’t expect Noelle to let them fight. He was thrilled. Fearing she might change her mind, he hurriedly said, “If Elliot loses, he immediately forfeits his chance at the main unit selection. He has to swear he’ll never try to join it in his life and leave IBI headquarters!”
