Noelle felt a headache coming on. Lucas really knew how to draw attention. He had basically turned the whole hall toward them. She looked up at him. “What’s up?”

“Can’t I come say hi without a reason?” Lucas lifted an eyebrow. “Why are you sitting so far back? Didn’t we save you a seat up front?”

A sharp gasp–spread through the crowd.

Being spoken to by him left Eleanor completely stunned. She stood up clumsily, nearly tripping as she gave up her seat.

Lucas sat down naturally beside Noelle, crossing his long legs and leaning back. He looked relaxed, yet dangerously attractive.

He turned toward her. “How’s your foot? You’re already grown. How did you still end up getting picked on? I heard during the military drill, people were lining up to mess with you.”

His words sounded concerned, but his tone was annoyingly smug. “Now that I’m here, tell me who did it. I’ll get payback for you.”

Holly wasn’t sitting with Noelle, but they were in the same class and close enough to hear. When she caught Lucas’s words, her heart skipped.

Seeing Noelle act bored and not complain to Lucas at all, Holly finally relaxed.
