“Let me ask you–why did you treat Ms. Charlotte like that? That is the Guzmans! Can we afford to offend them? Even if you are unhappy, couldn’t you just hold it in? Did you have to embarrass her in front of everyone and burn all your bridges?”
Belinda gently patted Brandon’s back at the side and softly advised, “Honey, please calm down. Lucas is still young. He’s naturally straightforward and doesn’t understand all these social games yet. You can teach him slowly.”
As she spoke, her eyes drifted toward Lucas. She had a look that said, See? You’re causing trouble for your father again.
Derek also said in a low voice, “Dad, Lucas might have just been impulsive and didn’t think much. When I went out to see Ms. Charlotte off, I tried my best to apologize. I just hope she won’t hold it against us.”
“Won’t hold a grudge?” Brandon gave a bitter laugh and rubbed his forehead tiredly. “The Guzmans are a top–tier family in Kingstowne! Ms. Charlotte is Angus’s favorite granddaughter right now. She was humiliated in front of everyone. How could she not hold a grudge? Lucas, do you have any idea how much trouble you’ve caused? I’m not saying you have to suck up to everyone, but you should at least have some common sense! If you keep acting like this, how will you ever lead this family? How will you survive in this circle?”
Brandon almost yelled the last few sentences. Beside

anger, there was a hint of pain and disappointment in his voice.
His late wife’s early death and Belinda’s entry into the family had created distance between them.
Deep down, he still hoped his son would be successfu
and responsible.
But in his eyes, what Lucas did today was reckless and stupid. It ruined his future and hurt the family.
Lucas listened to his father’s words. When Brandon questioned his capability to lead the family, his eyes shook. But soon, a look of even deeper mockery replaced it.
He curled his lips into a dry smile. “Lead this family? Since when does this family need me to lead it? Don’t you have your good wife and your sensible, smooth–talking son here? I’m just a rebel who grew up wild in Riverdale, who doesn’t know the rules and only causes trouble. I didn’t come back to learn how to suck up to people, and I sure as hell didn’t come back to beg for someone’s approval!”
“Y–you bastard!”
Brandon was so enraged that his vision got blurry. The last shred of restraint burned away. He suddenly pointed at the ebony box. holding the family punishment to one side of the living room and shouted at the butler, “Today I will beat some sense into this ungrateful brat! I’ll make him understand what priorities are and what responsibility means!”
The butler trembled. He didn’t dare to say no. He shakily brought over a thick, heavy black vine whip.
Belinda gasped and pretended to stop him. “Honey! You can’t! Lucas knows he’s wrong now. Don’t make yourself get overly agitated over this.” Her eyes, however, kept glancing at the whip.
Derek also stepped forward, looking anxious. “Dad, don’t do this. Lucas just lost it for a moment.”
“Get out of the way!”
Brandon snatched the whip and swung it hard in the air. It made a scary whistling sound.

He glared at Lucas, his eyes turning red. “I’ll ask you one last time. Do you admit you were wrong?!”

Lucas looked at his enraged father and the whip. The last faint bit of hope in his heart went out. He curved his lips into a bleak, resolute smile, slowly stood up, straightened his back, and even stepped forward half a step, fully exposing his back.
“I’m not wrong,” he said quietly, but his voice was very clear. “If you want to hit me, then hit me. When you’re done, I’ll leave. I won’t stay and annoy you anymore.”
This attitude was like adding fuel to a fire.
Brandon trembled with fury. Without another word, he raised his arm and swung with all his strength, whipping fiercely toward
Lucas’s back.
The whip lashed out like a venomous snake.
Just as the tip of the whip was about to tear through the air and hit Lucas’s clothes, a hand shot out with incredible steadiness. The fingers closed and grabbed the whip tightly in mid–air!
Snap!
The dull sound of the whip being forcibly stopped made everyone’s heart jump.
Everyone was stunned, including Brandon.
It felt like time had stopped.
Everyone looked over in shock. Noelle was somehow standing silently next to Lucas.
Her face was calm. She didn’t even look at Brandon. She just looked down at her hand holding the whip.
The rough surface of the whip and its hidden thorns left deep marks in her soft palm. They quickly turned a bright, stinging red.
She had actually caught the whip barehanded.
“Ms. Kain?”
Brandon froze. His hand holding the whip stayed stuck in the air. His anger was interrupted by this sudden event, and he felt a bit
lost.
Sebastian moved to Noelle’s side like a mountain. His face was icy, his gaze dark as it swept over the whip in Brandon’s hand and the reddened palm of Noelle. The pressure around him dropped to a terrifying level.
Lucas turned his head sharply. When he saw Noelle standing beside him, blocking the whip for him, and saw that glaring red mark on her palm, his pupils shrank violently.
