Roger looked at Mick’s unwavering eyes and parted his lips. But in the end, everything he wanted to say collapsed into a sigh.
He knew Mick too well. Once he made up his mind, no one could talk him out of it.
And it was that passion and commitment to the stage that had brought him this far.
“Dr. Kain…” Roger turned toward Noelle. His voice dropped. “Are you absolutely sure? The risk-”
Noelle stayed calm. “No doctor can promise a hundred percent success. But I’ll do everything in my power. The treatment relies on his cooperation and his ability to withstand the pain. If he can’t bear it, I’ll stop immediately.”
She turned to Mick. “Are you certain? Once it begins, there’s no turning back. The first three days are critical. You’ll have to endure the pain. No random movements. No taking medication on your own.”
Mick nodded. His complexion was pale, but he gave a small, firm smile.
“I’m not afraid of pain. I won’t regret it. Dr. Kain, I’ll count on you.”
The moment Noelle left the hospital, her phone rang.
It was Serena.
“Noey, I found something on Viola,” Serena said. “She’s definitely not the Guzmans‘ biological daughter. She’s an imposter. But here’s the weird part–there really was a paternity test when she entered the family.
“With the Guzmans‘ resources, there’s no way she could’ve faked it or altered the results.
“So how did she get the test to prove she was their daughter?”
Serena sounded genuinely confused.
Viola wasn’t the Guzmans‘ daughter.
So how had the paternity test verified she was?
Noelle’s thoughts started racing. Images flashed through her mind.
Jasper pausing mid–sentence, as if there was something he wanted to say but held back.
Viola’s expression when she looked at her–like she’d seen a ghost. That flicker of guilt. That flicker of fear.
All those pieces tangled together and pointed toward one unbelievable possibility.
Could it be–
“Nolley?” Serena called again.
Noelle took a deep breath. “Serena, check one more thing. I need to know how old the Guzmans‘ second daughter was when she went missing.”
Serena’s voice shifted. “You’re saying-”

“Yeah.” Noelle’s grip on the phone tightened, her eyes turning cold.

In the following days, Noelle kept commuting to the hospital. Mick’s leg continued to improve.
Back at Kingstowne University, the Independence Day showcase was approaching fast.
Each department had to send participants.
Eleanor had a strong dance background. She signed up right away and tried to rope Quinna in, but Quinna had no coordination and turned her down on the spot.
Eleanor ended up showing up at Noelle’s dorm room looking pitiful. “Noelle, come sign up with me. Let’s do it together.”
“I can’t dance,” Noelle replied. “And I’m swamped right now. I really can’t.”
She had way too much going on. Mick’s situation hadn’t been fully resolved yet.
“And don’t you already have enough people? I’ll just cheer you on.”
Quinna adjusted her glasses. “Exactly. We’ll cheer for you from the sidelines.”
Eleanor looked instantly defeated, like a puppy that had just been left behind. She walked away step by step, glancing back several times, then went to chase down other classmates who had signed up.
A few moments later, Eleanor returned, surrounded by other students who were talking nonstop.
From their chatter, Noelle picked up phrases like “It’s too hard,” “I can’t memorize the steps,” and “there’s no energy.”
“Should we give up? Mick’s choreography is on another level,” one of them muttered.
“But anything else would be boring,” Eleanor pushed back. “This is the Independence Day showcase. The whole campus will be watching.”
“Mick?” Noelle echoed. She’d paused while writing and looked up in surprise.
Eleanor lit up. She ran over and said, “You know Mick too? He’s amazing! He sings, dances, dominates the stage. He’s our idol! His concert’s next month, but we couldn’t get tickets. So we wanted to perform his debut number, ‘Breaking Dawn,‘ but…”
She slumped. “His choreography’s too difficult. The steps are complicated, the rhythm’s fast, and you need insane control. There’s no official tutorial. Just scattered clips from performances. We tried copying them, but it’s just chaos.”
