“Hello.”

Mary’s weak, tearful voice came through the line. “Noey… I was out shopping, and slipped. I think I twisted my ankle. It hurts so much… Can you take me to the hospital? I’m all alone and really scared…”
Noelle went quiet.
Her first instinct was suspicion. This sounded like another one of Mary’s tricks.
“Have the driver take you or call an ambulance.”
“The driver’s off today… Noey, my foot really hurts. I can’t move… I’m right outside Elysian Table… Can you come get me? I’m sorry about last night…”
Mary sounded even more pitiful now, her voice choking slightly.
Noelle pinched the bridge of her nose.
Logic told her not to get involved, but hearing the pain and pleading in Mary’s voice still softened her for a moment.
Mary was a proud person. For her to suddenly sound this weak, maybe something really had happened.
“Send me the address.”
She gave in.
“Okay, okay! I’ll send it right now! It’s a private room on the third floor of Elysian Table. You’ll see me as soon as you get there!”
After hanging up, Noelle stared at the address Mary sent and felt something was off.
If she fell at the entrance, why would she be in a private room on the third floor?
But thinking that Mary was injured, Noelle didn’t dwell on it. She got ready and headed over.
When she arrived at Elysian Table, Noelle gave Mary’s name.
The server smiled immediately. “Ms. Charlotte, right? Please come this way! Mrs. Guzman already told us. Once you arrived, we were to take you straight in!
“We’re here. Please go in.”
At the door, the server smiled brightly. “We hope you have a pleasant experience!”
Noelle’s frown deepened. She said nothing and pushed the door open.
The room was brightly lit and tastefully decorated. There were even delicate desserts laid out on the table.
But Mary wasn’t there.
Instead, there was a man in a suit, hair slicked back, probably in his 20s. Sitting in the main seat, his eyes lit up the moment he saw Noelle, and he stood immediately.

“You must be Ms. Guzman. Hello!”
He walked over quickly, extending his hand, his smile overly eager. “I’m Chase Lancaster. I sent you a message request yesterday. Mrs. Guzman introduced us.”
Noelle’s expression turned cold instantly. She didn’t take his hand and glanced around the empty room. “Where’s Mrs. Guzman?”
“Oh, she had an urgent matter come up and had to leave.”
Chase lied smoothly and pulled out the chair beside him. “She asked me to make sure I took good care of you. Please sit. Let’s
talk.”
Noelle didn’t move. Her voice was flat. “There’s nothing for us to talk about. I have a husband.”
“A husband?”
Chase’s smile froze for a second, then stretched even wider. “You mean Sebastian? Yeah, I’ve heard Mrs. Guzman mention him. But come on, Ms. Guzman, you’re not married yet, right? No certificate means it doesn’t really count.”
As he spoke, his eyes sized Noelle up, a faint trace of condescension and calculation hidden inside.
The newly found Guzmans‘ second daughter. Pretty, sure, but raised in the countryside, how sophisticated could she really be?
If it weren’t for her status, if I weren’t trying to climb the Guzman ladder, I wouldn’t bother with a ‘country girl‘ like this.
“And besides,” Chase lowered his voice, acting like he was looking out for her, “Sebastian doesn’t exactly have a good reputation. I heard he was kicked out of the Menzies. He spent over ten years in some backwater like Riverdale and was even crippled… though I guess he’s cured now. But what happened to his parents back then? Unbelievable. They even got their own younger brother and sister–in–law killed.
“With that kind of family background, those ruthless methods, how could he possibly be worthy of someone with your status, Ms. Guzman? You just got back to Kingstowne, so you might not know, but it’s better to stay far away from men like that…”
He went on and on, dumping every bit of so–called dirt he’d heard about Sebastian, his tone dripping with disdain. It was as it tearing Sebastian down made him look noble and upright by comparison.
With every word, Noelle’s expression hardened, turning cold as ice. Her fingers at her side curled slightly.
At that moment, the private room door hadn’t been shut completely, and someone happened to pass by in the hallway.
