Mary was shoved hard and tumbled into the roadside bushes, while the black sedan slammed into the person who’d rushed out of nowhere, sending them flying.
The black car didn’t slow down or even pause to check. It hit the gas and vanished into the darkness at the end of the road.
Ignoring the pain, Mary scrambled to her feet and rushed to help the person who’d just saved her life.
Under the harsh streetlight, the figure lay curled on the ground. A dark red pool of blood spread quickly beneath thern, long hair tangled and covering their face.
Mary’s hands trembled as she brushed the hair aside.
When she finally saw the face-
Mary’s breath stopped. Her head buzzed, her mind going completely blank.
“V–Viola?” She screamed, her voice sharp and broken.
The person lying there, unconscious between life and death, was Viola.
At the hospital.
After finishing the examination, the doctor said, “Mrs. Guzman, please don’t worry. She only has some superficial injuries. She’ll wake up soon.”
Mary stood by the bed, staring at Viola’s pale face and closed eyes, her expression complicated.
She looked away and said to the doctor, “Thank you for your trouble. About what happened tonight… don’t let it get out.”
“Sure, Mrs. Guzman. I understand.”
The doctor tactfully left the room and gently closed the door behind him.
The room was left with only Mary and the unconscious Viola.
Mary stood there for a long time, her gaze fixed on the bandages around Viola’s forehead and arms. In the end, she let out a soft sigh and sat down in the chair beside the bed.
About half an hour later, Viola’s eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly opened her eyes.
Her gaze was dazed at first. When she saw Mary by the bed, she froze, then struggled to sit up. “M–Mom–I mean, Mrs. Guzman? Are you okay? Are you hurt?”
Mary pressed her back down. “Don’t move. Lie still.”
Her tone wasn’t warm, but it wasn’t cold either.
Viola obediently lay back down, her eyes dimming as her voice softened. “I’m sorry… I forgot. I don’t … have the right to call you Mom anymore.”
She sniffed, her eyes turning red. “I just… I saw you in danger and didn’t think about anything else. I rushed over without thinking. I 1/3

didn’t do it to make up for anything. I know what I did before hurt you, and hurt Noelle too. Those things aren’t so easily forgiven…”
She looked up at Mary through tear–filled eyes, her voice full of regret and humility. “I was wrong back then. I shouldn’t have lost my mind and pretended to be Noey, taking everything that belonged to her… But I… I really just wanted a mom, a family. You treated me so well, gave me warmth I’d never felt before. I truly loved and respected you as my own mother… It was because I was so afraid of losing that, that I did so many terrible things to Noey…
“I know it’s too late to say any of this now.” Tears slid down her pale cheeks. “I’m not asking for your forgiveness, and I don’t dare hope to go back to the Guzmans. As long as you’re safe, that’s enough… I’ll leave right away. I won’t stay here and bother you…”
As she spoke, she threw back the covers and struggled to get out of bed. The moment her feet touched the floor, dizziness hit her. Her legs gave out, and she nearly collapsed.
Mary reached out almost instinctively and caught her.
Viola leaned into Mary’s arms, trembling slightly like a frightened animal, her voice choked with sobs. “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry… I’ll leave right away…”
Holding her, feeling how weak and unsteady she was, the hardness in Mary’s heart finally loosened a little.
No matter how many wrongs Viola had committed in the past, at least in that moment, she had truly risked her life to save her.
This was the child Mary had once genuinely loved and cherished as her own daughter.
“That’s enough. Stop forcing yourself.” Mary’s voice was still cool, but she didn’t let go of her. “The doctor said you need rest. Just lie down and recover.”
She helped Viola back onto the bed and tucked the blanket around her.
Viola sniffled softly. “I–I’m really fine, Mrs. Guzman. You don’t need to worry about me-”
“Enough talking. Rest.” see you later.”
cut her off, her tone carrying its usual authority. “I’ll have a caregiver come look after you. I’ll… come
With that, Mary didn’t look at Viola again and turned to leave the room.
The door closed.
On the bed, the weak, sobbing Viola lifted a hand and wiped away her tears. A victorious smile spread across her pale face, not a trace of the earlier fragility or remorse left.
She gently stroked the bandaged arm, her eyes cold.
Noelle, Noelle. So what if you’ve gone back to the Guzmans?
