Just as they were about to get back in line, Mick walked over and said to the old man and his son, “Sir, Dr. Mayer’s line is really long -you’ll be waiting a while. Dr. Kain is a great doctor too. Why not let her take a look at you first?”
Listening to his words, Samuel Langley and his son, Benjamin, hesitated, glancing at Noelle. When they saw she was only in her twenties, the doubt on their faces was obvious.
In the end, Benjamin shook his head politely. “Thanks, but we’ll wait for Dr. Mayer.”
A few villagers overheard and jumped in, “Samuel, you should let Dr. Mayer examine you! He’s a famous miracle healer!”
“Yeah, that girl’s just too young…”
Samuel eventually gave in to the crowd and sat down in front of Steve.
Steve examined Samuel’s leg carefully.
It looked like it had been crushed years ago and never treated right, leaving it permanently damaged.
Now, the bones were out of place, the muscles had wasted away, and years of hard work and cold weather had left him with severe, chronic joint problems and full–blown arthritis.
Steve felt around the leg, asked some questions, and finally shook his head with regret.
“Your leg… It’s been dragged on too long. The bones and tendons are set. Getting it back to normal just isn’t possible anymore.” Steve’s tone was honest and kind. “I’ll give you some medication to help with the pain and circulation, and needle therapy might make walking a little easier. But as for a permanent fix… I’m sorry, there’s just nothing more I can do.”
As Samuel listened, the light of hope faded from his eyes. His callused hand clenched at his shirt, clearly disappointed.
Still, he managed a gentle smile and thanked Steve. “Thank you, doctor. Thank you for seeing me. I knew my leg wasn’t getting better… Sorry to trouble you.”
Benjamin bowed his head. “Thank you, Dr. Mayer…”
If even the best doctor can’t fix my father’s leg, maybe it really is hopeless…
Mick watched and then turned to Noelle, who’d been quietly sitting at her table. He asked, quietly, “Dr. Kain, do you think there’s anything you could do for a case like this?”
Before Noelle could say anything, Maisy couldn’t help but scoff under her breath, just loud enough for people nearby to hear
“Even an experienced doctor like Dr. Mayer says there’s nothing that can be done. Dr. Kain, you’ve got some nerve, talking like you have all the answers at your age.”
Noelle didn’t even look her way. She just studied the old man’s twisted leg, thoughtful and silent.
Steve finished up the prescription and gave a few more reminders.
Samuel and Benjamin thanked him again and made their way out. Leaning on each other, they both looked especially pitiful.

By evening, the show’s crew and guests were resting and eating in the lodging that the villagers had set up for them.

No one expected Samuel and Benjamin to come back, carrying a basket of homegrown vegetables and some homemade smoked meat. They insisted on thanking Steve and the crew for the free treatment and medicine.
Terrence tried to decline but the old man refused to leave until they accepted. In the end, the crew took the food, figuring they’d find a way to return the favor later.
Steve watched the old man’s grateful face, then looked down at his limping leg, feeling a heavy weight in his chest.
He’d spent his whole life as a doctor, and nothing hit him harder than seeing someone suffer–especially those whose treatment had been delayed by poverty or simply not knowing better.
After dinner, Steve went back to his room, paced for a while, then finally picked up his phone and dialed a number.
He was calling Franz Dillingham, the director at Horizon Hospital.
Franz had been his classmate back in med school, but they worked at different hospitals now, only catching up from time to time on academic stuff.
Steve had heard that Horizon Hospital brought in a superstar specialist–someone known for tackling tough, chronic cases–and he wanted to see if there might be another option for Samuel.
The phone rang a few times before it was picked up by an assistant.
“Dr. Mayer, Dr. Dillingham is in surgery right now. It’s an emergency, so he can’t take calls. Can I pass along a message?”
The assistant sounded polite and professional.
Since Franz was busy, Steve said, “It’s nothing urgent–I just wanted to ask his opinion about a patient. No worries, just tell him I hope the surgery goes well.”
He figured he’d try calling again next time–maybe then he could get that miracle healer’s contact and see if that young prodigy had any ideas.
Meanwhile, in Noelle’s room…
She was lying in bed, scrolling on her phone.
