“I… how could I give birth to someone this cruel?” Mary clutched her chest as if she couldn’t breathe. Tears streamed down her face. “Our relationship was bad, and now I know why. It was all because of her. She was the one stirring trouble between us.”
Noelle cut her off at once. Her voice was calm but firm. “No. It wasn’t because of her.”
Mary and everyone else turned to look at her.
Noelle stared at Mary sharply. “The reason our relationship was bad was never Alina. It was you.
“When you chose to secretly hide Viola away, when you ignored me and blamed me again and again because of her; when today, instead of welcoming me home, you ran off to comfort Viola and tried to brush me off with a luxury gift you bought at the last
minute.”
Noelle spoke each word slowly and clearly. “The moment you made those choices, the bond between us as mother and daughter was already gone.”
Her words were like sharp icicles stabbing straight into Mary’s heart.
Mary staggered backward. Her face turned pale. Her lips trembled, but no sound came out.
She thought she had hidden everything well.
Now she realized that Noelle had known all along.
She knew her mother hid Viola away. She knew her mother was brushing her off.
“Noey, I…”
Mary tried to speak, but her lips shook so badly she couldn’t say a single word.
“Take Mary back to her room,” Angus said tiredly, waving his hand.
In that moment, he seemed to age ten years.
His sons also looked deeply pained.
Late that night, Noelle went to Alina’s room.
It was quiet.
When she pushed open the heavy wooden door, it creaked softly. Alina heard the sound. Her back stiffened, but she did not turn
around.
Neither of them spoke.
After a long silence, Alina finally broke it.
“When did you find out?” Her voice was hoarse.
“A long time ago,” Noelle answered calmly.

Alina let out a bitter laugh. “So all the things I tried to hide… all the ways I tried to fix things… I must have looked like a clown.”
Noelle said nothing.
After a moment of silence, Alina’s voice grew softer, filled with deep exhaustion. “You know what? These twenty years weren’t easy for me either. Ever since you disappeared, Mom has been like a person who had lost her soul. Some days she was better. On those days she held your picture and cried. On bad days, she didn’t even see me as her daughter.”
She paused, her voice drifting. “And Dad, you seen it yourself. He’s never at home. This house is just a place to stop by once in a while. Something serious happened, and he still hasn’t shown up. I worked like crazy. I carried the company on my shoulders. I thought if I worked hard enough, I’d finally get a little recognition… a little attention.” She gave a quiet laugh. “Doesn’t that sound pathetic?”
Alina slowly turned her head and looked at Noelle. Her eyes were red, but her head was clear, cruelly so. “But none of that is an excuse. I know that. No matter how hard my life was, it should never have become a reason to hurt you and keep making the same mistake again and again.” She lowered her head slightly. “This terrible big sister of yours is actually a pretty big failure. My whole life feels like a joke.”
Noelle listened quietly, her face calm.
The room was silent except for the soft crackling of the aromatic candle flame.
“Do you hate me?” Alina asked softly.
“No,” Noelle replied. “You’re not worth it.” Her voice was flat and distant.
Alina’s tears almost fell again.
Then, she smiled.
Well said, I’m not worth it.
Yes, that is better. Someone like me probably isn’t worthy in Noelle’s eyes.
Alina slowly closed her eyes. In the dim light, a tear slipped down her face.
Mary sat on the floor in her room and cried uncontrollably.
She held the only old photo she had of Noelle as a baby, which she had found in a cabinet.
The baby in the photo had bright eyes and a sweet smile, innocent and pure.
This was her daughter.
Her daughter.
That night, the lights in the house stayed on very late.
