Noelle stepped out of her room and looked at the frightened faces around her. “Don’t worry,” she said calmly. “I already contacted the city. Professional rescue teams are on the way. They should arrive soon.”
But her words did not fully calm the crowd.
The city?
Driving from there would take seven or eight hours. In weather like this, could they really make it in time?
Everyone stood there, uneasy and tense. Each minute felt painfully slow. Then suddenly, something changed.
About an hour later, a deep rumbling sound came from outside. The noise kept getting louder, and even the ground began to shake.
“That’s bad! A flash flood! A mudslide!” an experienced local man shouted in terror.
“Run! Get to higher ground!” Terrence yelled at the top of his lungs.
Panic broke out at once. People rushed out of the temporary camp and ran toward the nearby hillside. It was higher and safer.
Rain poured down around them. The scene turned chaotic. People cried, shouted, and pushed each other as they ran for their lives.
Jasper reacted the fastest. The moment he heard the strange rumbling, he rushed straight to Noelle and Sebastian. He grabbed Noelle’s arm. “Noey, we have to go now!”
At the same time, Sebastian moved beside her, shielding her as they quickly followed Jasper up the slope.
Meanwhile, Maisy was still lying where she had fallen. She watched the empty camp and the group that was running away. Her eyes widened in despair.
She wanted to run for her life too. But the pain in her legs was unbearable. She couldn’t even stand, let alone run on the slippery muddy hillside.
All she could do was stretch out her hand weakly. “Help! Please help me! Don’t leave me here!”
Noelle had already run some distance when she suddenly looked back. Her steps slowed.
Sebastian noticed right away. “What is it?”
Noelle looked toward Maisy. She was silent for a moment.
“Jasper,” Noelle said calmly, her voice steady even in the wind and rain. “Go back and carry het.”
Jasper stopped instantly. He turned around and stared at Noelle in disbelief. His face filled with anger and refusal. “Noey! Why should we help her? She brought it to herself!”
“Enough,” Noelle snapped. “Just go. Carry her and catch up.”
“Then let Sebastian do it! He listens to you anyway!” Jasper said, pointing at Sebastian, trying to push the job onto him.

That look made Jasper freeze for a second. In the end, he gritted his teeth. He shot a furious glance toward Maisy’s direction, the ran back toward the collapsing camp. The rain was getting heavier, and loose rocks kept rolling down the slope. Still, Jasper rus straight into the storm.
Back in the camp, Maisy stared in terror at Jasper, who had just returned. He was soaked from head to toe. Rain dripped from hi hair and clothes. His eyes were cold and frightening. Maisy’s soul almost left her body. She quickly crawled backward, trying to away. “W–what are you doing?! Go away! You pushed me! I remember everything!”
Jasper slowly crouched down beside her. He leaned close to her ear and spoke in a low voice that only the two of them could he “If you don’t want to die here,” he said coldly, “then keep your mouth shut. Remember this. You slipped and fell by accident. Thi the story. Understand?”
Suddenly, a sharp flash appeared between his fingers. At some point, he had picked up a thin, jagged piece of rock. The edge wa sharp. He lightly dragged it across the muddy ground beside Maisy’s face. “If you say one wrong word,” he whispered, “I’ll kill yo
Maisy froze completely. She didn’t even dare breathe. Her eyes widened with pure fear. She nodded again and again, as if her life depended on it.
Jasper finally stood up with satisfaction. Without another word, he grabbed Maisy and roughly lifted her onto his shoulder like a sack of grain.
Her stomach was pressed hard against his shoulder. The movement pulled at her injured leg. Maisy let out a quiet groan of pam didn’t dare make a sound.
Jasper carried her and quickly caught up with the group that was evacuating.
As she bounced painfully on his shoulder, Maisy’s blurry eyes drifted forward. Through the wind and rain, she saw a thin figure walking at the front of the group. Noelle. Even in the storm, her back was straight. Her voice stayed calm as she directed everyon where to go.
Maisy’s emotions twisted inside her chest.
She hated Noelle. She envied Noelle. Just moments ago, she had even cursed her.
When everyone else had left her behind, it was Noelle who told people to go back and rescue her.
Steve was struggling. He was older, and the muddy mountain trail was slippery. Soon he began to fall behind, breathing heavily
Sebastian noticed right away. He walked over and crouched down in front of Steve. “Sorry about this,” he said.
Then he lifted the older man onto his back and kept walking with steady steps.
Many people in the group felt deeply moved at the scene.
