Noelle looked at her, calm and unreadable. She waited until Jaylee finished. “You think I care about your necklace?”

“Lucas told me about you.” Noelle’s tone was steady. “He said you’re proud. Your family’s struggling. Your mom is sick. You work jobs while going to school. You always kept your head up and never gave in.”

Noelle kept watching, her face blank.

Jaylee’s chest heaved. She blinked away tears, refusing to let them fall.

She stared at Noelle, wounded and angry, as if Noelle was the rich girl who could never understand the feelings of the oppressed.

Noelle waited for Jaylee to finish. Her face never changed.

When Jaylee ran out of words, Noelle said, “A lot of people have had it rough.”

Jaylee choked on her anger.

“There are plenty who’ve had it worse, but they don’t all turn out like this.”

Noelle’s voice was calm. “Now you chase status, step on others, spend Lucas‘ money, talk behind his back, and look down on him. If you don’t even like him, why are you with him? Are you trying to have it both ways?”

Jaylee’s face turned red, then white. She couldn’t find a comeback. After a moment, she let out a cold, reckless laugh. “Ms. Kain, I know you’re powerful. You’re the Guzmans‘ daughter. You’re rich. You can look down on me all you want.

“But Lucas loves me. He can’t live without me. You might be his friend, but I’m his girlfriend. You should know your place and stay out of our business.”

Her words were blunt and sharp, daring Noelle to argue.
