She braced herself against the wall, breathing hard. Then her eyes suddenly turned red.
Mary stared at the door. At the marks she had left on it from kicking. Her voice softened, trembling with tears.
“You brat, why are you so stubborn?”
No one answered.
The hallway was quiet except for Mary’s muffled sobs.
They stayed outside, calling her name again and again. They kept going until late at night. Angus was old, and they were worried he couldn’t take it. They quickly took him home to
rest.
Lucas was dragged off by Gus to eat something. Serena fell asleep in the corner, leaning against the wall. Primo and Duo took turns keeping watch.
Moonlight slipped through the window, spreading across the floor like pale silver.
Then a figure appeared at the end of the hallway
She walked slowly, unsteadily, like she had walked for a long, long way.
She wore a simple black coat. Her face was pale. Dark circles hung under her eyes. She looked as thin as a skeleton.
It was Alina.
She had heard what happened and rushed over.
Alina thought that after she left, Noelle would live well. That she would be happy.
But instead, Noelle had suffered like this.
Alina hated herself. It was all her fault.
All of it.
If she hadn’t made that one wrong choice back then, Noelle might never have met Sebastian. None of this would have happened.

She walked to the door and stopped.
Alina stood there for a long, long time.
So long that the moonlight shifted, casting different shadows across her body.
Then she raised her hand and knocked softly.
“Noey.” Her voice was hoarse, shaking. “I’m sorry, I came too late.”
No answer.
Alina leaned against the door and slowly slid down to the floor.
She buried her face in her knees. Her shoulders trembled.

“I’m sorry…” Her voice was muffled with tears. “I owe you too much… All these years, you were suffering, and I was living well. When you were being bullied, I knew nothing. When you married Sebastian, I was still hiding from you.”
Her voice grew lower and weaker, until it was almost impossible to hear.
“Come out. Let me apologize to you face–to–face, okay? Let me do something… Anything… I don’t ask you to forgive me… I just want to see you eat something… Please…”
Still nothing.
Alina stayed there, unmoving, her head buried in her knees.
The moonlight stretched her shadow long across the floor.
The hallway fell silent.
At some point, Lucas woke up. He stood not far away, watching her.
Serena was awake too, leaning against the wall, her eyes filled with mixed emotions.
Gus stood by the stairs, holding a bowl of newly cooked grits. His eyes were red.
Primo and Duo stood on both sides, heads lowered.
Angus had come back at some point. He stood at the far end of the hall, tears running down his face.
All the uncles and cousins were there too. No one spoke.
Everyone gathered in the hallway, staring at that closed door and Alina, who leaned against it

and sobbed soundlessly.
After a long time, Serena let out a soft sigh.
“Let’s go,” she said quietly, almost like a whisper. We can only wait until she’s ready.”
She stood up and walked over to Alina, gently patting her shoulder.
“Get up,” she said. “She can’t see you like this.”
