Noelle’s voice was calm, like she was talking about something that didn’t involve her at all. “You think if it weren’t to save you, he wouldn’t have gone. So you sit here, refusing to eat, skipping your dressing changes, making yourself suffer more and more. Like that will ease your guilt.”

Ethan jerked his head up.

His eyes were red. There were tears, anger, and something else he couldn’t name.

“What do you know?” His voice was hoarse, almost breaking, shaking with held–back emotion. “You don’t know anything!”

Noelle just looked at him. She said nothing.

“Why did he even go?” Ethan’s voice began to shake. “Why would he trade his life for mine? We never got along growing up. I yelled at him. I drove him out of Kingstowne. I even called him a cripple. He never treated me nicely either! What kind of cousins are we? Why would he—”

His voice caught in his throat and broke into a low, choked sound.

He turned his head away and bit down hard, trying to stop the tears.

Noelle watched him.

Watched how stubborn and fragile he looked. Watched how he tried so hard not to cry, but his shoulders still shook. Watched the hand that was still bleeding.

She suddenly remembered what Sebastian once said.

Noelle stood up and walked to the bedside. She reached for the tray of supplies.
