Noelle took one step forward.
Viola flinched and stepped back.

“From the day Sebastian disappeared, I lost it,” Noelle said softly. Her voice was so light; it sounded like she was talking about someone else. “So don’t talk to me about law.”
She crouched down until they were eye–level.
There was no anger in her eyes. No sadness either. Only a calm that made people’s skin crawl.
“If Jasper won’t answer my calls, I’ll burn his house,” she said. “If one isn’t enough, I’ll burn another. I’ll keep going until he shows up.”
Viola stared at her, shaking all over.
This woman had gone crazy.
Completely crazy.
“W–what do you even want?” Viola stammered.
Noelle stood up and looked down at her.
“Can’t you understand words? I want him to show up. I want him to come see me.”
Viola froze for a second. Then a twisted smile spread across her face.
She tilted her chin up, her lips curling in mockery.
“Keep dreaming. My brother will never come see you. Oh, I get it now. You’re here because your husband’s gone, right? So you came here because you lose your mind? Maybe he died because of you. Anyone who stays with you ends badly.
“And who do you think you are? You think he’d come for you-”
Before she could finish, a hand slammed down on the back of her head.

Another hit.
This time, Viola broke.
She lay on the ground, trembling. Blood ran down her forehead, covering her face. She couldn’t say another word.
Noelle didn’t let go. Like something straight out of a nightmare, she kept pressing Viola’s head down, slamming it against the floor again and again.
Thud!
Thud!
Thud!
That noise made people’s scalps prickle.
Each hit made everyone around them flinch.
Noelle’s face didn’t change at all. Her cold voice cut through the air.
“Tell Jasper this–he shows up, and I stop. If he doesn’t, we’ll see if Viola lives long enough to wait for him.”
Half an hour later, Jasper finally arrived.
Several men followed behind him.
The moment he stepped out of the car, he saw Viola lying on the ground in a pool of blood. Blood still seeped from her forehead. She was barely breathing.
His gaze paused.
Then he looked at Noelle.
She had lost a lot of weight.
Her cheeks were hollow. Dark circles sat under her eyes. She looked like she could be knocked over by a gust of wind.

“These past few days…” he said quietly, his voice low, filled with something hard to name, “you’ve been through a lot. You’ve lost so much weight.”
Noelle didn’t answer. She just looked at him.
Jasper let out a small sigh. There was helplessness in his eyes. And something close to indulgence.
He opened his hands slightly, his tone gentle, like he was calming a stubborn child.
“Noey, if you want to burn houses, go ahead. Burn as many as you like. As long as you’re happy, I’d give up anything for you. As long as you’re happy.”
Noelle let out a cold laugh.
“Stop pretending,” she said, her voice sharp and cold. “Who made me like this? Who made Sebastian disappear? You know exactly why I’m here.”
She stepped closer, staring straight at him.
“Tell me. Where is Sebastian?”
Jasper stayed silent for two seconds. Then he shook his head.
“I warned you, Noey,” he said, a hint of exhaustion in his voice. “I never wanted you to get hurt. But this… I can’t tell you.”
“Can’t tell me?” Noelle repeated. A faint smile curved on her lips.
That smile made Jasper’s brow twitch.
The next second, she rushed forward and raised her hand.
Smack!
The sharp sound echoed as her palm struck his face.
Jasper’s head turned to the side. A red mark quickly spread across his cheek. He didn’t move. He didn’t speak.
“Can’t tell me?! You’re going to speak whether you like it or not!” Noelle’s voice trembled.
