Zane shot to his feet so fast that the chair crashed backward onto the floor. He didn’t even bother picking it up, his eyes already red. “Mom! You can feel pain?”
Elsa clutched her leg. Once it sank in, she started crying and laughing at the same time, her whole body shaking. “It hurts! It really hurts! It’s been ten years since I’ve felt pain!”
Noelle smiled faintly at their excitement and was just about to continue with the needle therapy when…
Bang!
The bedroom door slammed open.
A middle-aged man stormed in carrying a cup of instant pasta, still talking as he walked. “Honey, I brought your favori-”
He froze.
He saw the needle in Elsa’s leg, the tears on her face, Zane’s reddened eyes, and the strangers standing beside the bed.
His expression shifted from guilt to confusion, then to horror, and finally exploded into rage.
“What are you doing?” His voice jumped an octave as he slammed the pasta onto the table and rushed to the bedside in two strides, shielding Elsa like a mother hen protecting her chicks. “Who are you? Why are you sticking needles into my wife?”
Elsa grabbed his sleeve. “Mr. Covington, it’s not-”
“Don’t be scared! I’m here!” Timothy Covington barked furiously at Noelle, his voice loud enough to echo through the hallway. “Guards! Somebody get in here! There’s an assassin-
“Dad!” Zane grabbed him, shouting even louder than his father. “She’s a doctor! I brought her here to treat Mom!”
Timothy froze, mouth hanging open in disbelief.
“A doctor?” He looked at Noelle, then at Zane, then at the needle still sticking out of Elsa’s leg, his eyes practically popping out of his skull. “Her?”
“She just used one needle, and Mom’s leg regained feeling.” Zane’s voice still trembled, but his eyes shone brightly. “Dad, Mom’s leg can feel now. She can feel pain now!”
Timothy opened his mouth, but no words came out.
He lowered his head toward Elsa. Elsa was still crying, tears streaming down her face hard enough that even her nose was rung but the corners of her lips were lifted impossibly high.
“Honey, it’s true…” she rasped, clutching his hand. “I felt pain… after ten years for the first time…

But she stood perfectly straight, and her eyes were sharp as blades.
He opened his mouth to speak, swallowed the words, tried again, swallowed them again.
in the end, he drew in a deep breath, took two steps back, and lowered his head toward Noelle.
“Doctor, please-”
“No need to beg.” Noelle cut him off as she picked up the second needle, her tone calm enough that it sounded like she was commenting on the weather. “If I say I can heal her, then I can heal her.”
Timothy froze awkwardly in place, head lowered, unsure whether he should straighten up or just stay where he was.
Zane pulled him aside and whispered, “Dad, sit down first. Stop making trouble.”
“I’m making trouble?” Timothy glared at him, keeping his voice low. “When have I ever caused trouble? You little brat, watch your mouth.”
Zane ignored him and simply dragged a chair over to make space for him.
Timothy huffed and dropped heavily into the seat, but his eyes never left the needle in Noelle’s hand for even a second.
The second needle had already gone in.
This time, it pierced the outer side of Elsa’s calf. Noelle twisted it gently with her fingertips, and Elsa sucked in a sharp breath. This time, it wasn’t pain. It was soreness, the kind that spread through her entire leg like someone was wringing the muscles tight.
“So sore… It’s so sore…” she muttered through gritted teeth, sweat already forming on her forehead, but her eyes were terrifyingly bright.
Noelle said nothing. Third needle. Fourth. Fifth.
Every needle landed in a different place, some deep, some shallow. Her hands were terrifyingly steady, as if nailed in place, every strike precise to an almost frightening degree.
Timothy stared in complete shock, his jaw hanging open for so long that he forgot to close it.
He didn’t know medicine, but even he could tell this young woman’s skill far surpassed the so-called miracle doctors on the island.
Half an hour later, Noelle removed the needles.
