Under the dim lighting, a pale but delicate little face was finally revealed.
He wore a tailored black coat with dark gold detailing stitched along the collar. One look was enough to tell he came from money and power.
If Noelle and the others had been there, they would've instantly recognized him as the little boy who climbed out of the rice barrel.
The next day.
Before the sky had fully brightened and while the mountain fog still hung in the air, the Nightfall Circle plaza was already packed with people.
Nightfall Circle banners had been planted all around the massive plaza, snapping loudly in the morning wind.
At the northern end stood a raised platform furnished with several wingback chairs covered in dark red silk. Those seats had been prepared for the Four Great Families.
Hundreds of people packed tightly beneath the platform, and by the time Noelle's group arrived, the plaza was almost completely full.
Noelle didn't need to participate in today's tests. Mark had personally spoken up for her, meaning she was already officially part of the Medicine Department, but Lucas and Jasper still had to participate in the third round group battle.
"Noey, just sit back and watch while we crush everybody today."
Lucas stood there with two giant panda eyes while desperately trying to look heroic, but the dark bruises were way too eye-catching. Combined with the floral shirt hanging off him with only two buttons left intact, he looked less like a fighter and more like someone who'd just been beaten senseless and released from a woodshed.
He'd used the ointment Noelle gave him last night, and while the swelling had gone down significantly, the bruises remained. Purple mixed with blue and yellow in a spectacularly ridiculous mess.
Jasper stood beside him with one swollen eye too, but his cold expression and intimidating aura somehow made the black eye look fierce instead, like a one-eyed wolf.
Standing side-by-side, one looked like he'd been robbed, while the other looked like the guy who'd done the robbing. Neither looked remotely reliable.
Noelle glanced at them, then pulled out the porcelain bottle again and handed it over. "Apply another layer."
Lucas accepted it and smeared more ointment over his eyelids while baring his teeth from the sting. "Noey, your medicine works miracles. Last night, my eyes were swollen like walnuts, and this morning, most of it's already gone down. Later, make me a few extra bottles so I can keep them for emergencies."
"Don't worry. There's plenty." Noelle pulled out two more bottles of pills and handed them over. "One bottle each. Take them. They'll improve circulation and help during the group battle later."
"Noey, you're seriously the best."
Lucas grinned as he accepted the bottle and swallowed the pills immediately.
Jasper accepted his too, but his eyes visibly lit up. He tucked the bottle carefully into his clothes, almost reluctant to eat the pills.
His little sister was finally starting to care about him and give him things.
It felt good.
While the three of them talked, movement suddenly stirred on the platform above.
Jasper lowered his voice. "That's Floyd?"
At some point, Shirley had walked over beside them. Hearing Jasper's question, she curled her lips in disdain and sneered. "Country bumpkins. Of course, that's not him. The head of the Patton family's sickly and rarely leaves the house. That's his younger brother, Winston. You don't even recognize the Four Great Families, and you still dared come to the Nightfall Circle?"
Lucas glanced at her without speaking.
Jasper didn't bother responding either.
After failing to provoke them, Shirley snorted and crossed her arms while continuing to watch the platform.
Winston...
Noelle narrowed her eyes as cold light flashed through them.
Finally, the Duncans stepped onto the platform.
A middle-aged woman, in her early forties, walked up gracefully. Her appearance had been maintained exceptionally well, her skin pale and flawless, and there was a resemblance between her features and Shirley's. But compared to the previous three representatives, her presence completely overwhelmed them.
The moment she stood there, her gaze swept across the crowd below with effortless authority.
Her name was Christine Duncan. She had also been Floyd's childhood sweetheart. After Sebastian's mother left the island years ago, the Pattons had wanted Floyd to marry Christine instead, but Floyd absolutely refused and ultimately destroyed himself to the point where he could no longer function as a man.
