“Leonardo.” I wrapped my arms around his neck. “Maybe… I should talk to my grandfather about postponing the trip to Mervia for a few days?”
“Would postponing it mean you don’t have to go?” He saw right through me. No matter how worried I was, I couldn’t stay by his side every single moment.
I didn’t have a reply. He continued, “It’s better to go and come back sooner. Don’t forget, we still have our bonding ceremony to plan.”
He was right. I leaned against his shoulder and took a deep breath. His scent always calmed me -that unique, steady, and powerful pheromone of a top-tier Alpha werewolf.
Penelope’s POV:
Just after nightfall in Mervia, I received an encrypted call shortly after returning to my residence from seeing Vincent.
Seeing the number, my eyes turned cold. I waved off the people around me and went into the bedroom alone.
“Penelope, it’s been a long time.” This time, it wasn’t a voice modulator. It was a hoarse yet familiar male voice. No matter how many years passed, I would never forget that voice.
I opened my mouth, but before any sound came out, tears welled up uncontrollably.
“Stephen Mason… is it really you?” I asked.
“It’s me. I’m back.” The voice on the phone held a hint of laughter, then let out a slow breath. “Don’t worry. From now on, I’ll take over the ‘Void Conclave’ again. No one in Maritime City- no, in the entire country-will dare make you suffer again.”
His words were measured, but laced with lethal intent. I knew his promise was stronger than any talisman. But right now, I wasn’t thinking about being happy. The thought that he was finally back made years of pent-up grievance come pouring out.
He wasn’t from the Watson family, but he treated me better than a real brother. I was the Watson family’s illegitimate daughter, without status or recognition, bullied relentlessly since childhood.
When I was ten, I was deliberately abandoned in the remote mountains. I walked for two days and two nights, somehow ending up at the border.

A man pointed a gun at my head, but all I could focus on was the canteen of water hanging from his belt.
Later, I returned to the Watson family and grew up. That man protected me from the shadows. like an older brother. I saw him as family-a brother, a father, my only kin. And no matter what trouble I faced, he would move heaven and earth to help me.
It was much later that I learned who he really was: Stephen, chief Alpha of the internationally renowned werewolf mercenary group, the Void Conclave.
Stephen and his werewolf units took on jobs for major international figures. By the time I came of age, the Void Conclave had become a legendary presence worldwide, with members spread across the globe.
But then something happened. Stephen was set up and forced out of the Void Conclave. Before leaving, he specifically instructed his men to look after me.
I didn’t want to let him go. I even considered abandoning everything to follow him, but he refused. He carried too much debt, and his future was uncertain. Taking me along would only be a burden. More importantly, he knew me-I wasn’t a woman who lived for sentiment. What burned in my bones was a fierce life force, driven by resentment. The place I was headed for was the peak of money and power. As long as this material world existed, I would never stop.
After Stephen left, I lost my protection and gradually lost influence within the Watson family. It was at my most desperate moment that Alexander appeared.
It started as a marriage of convenience, a business alliance. But Alexander was good to me. After Stephen vanished, his enemies came looking for me. No one was willing to risk trouble for a man who had disappeared. Just before my bonding ceremony with Alexander, I was kidnapped and subjected to humiliation.
It was Alexander who paid a huge ransom and went alone to rescue me. Stephen’s enemies were ruthless killers. Alexander knew the odds were slim, but he went anyway.
We survived that ordeal by sheer luck, but Alexander was left completely unable to father children. I was consumed with guilt and promised to stay with him for life, even if we could never have pups.
Back then, I thought what we had was real, and Alexander understood what I wanted. He personally taught me, helped me step out of the Watson family’s shadow, and together we built the Moon-Shadowed Pack’s commercial empire and its vast territory. I poured all my passion and effort into the Moon-Shadowed Pack.
But I never imagined that deep affection could be so fragile. After Alexander’s death, a secret daughter appeared out of nowhere. He hadn’t breathed a word of it to me. And the most ridiculous part? He’d made a will behind my back, leaving all his assets-including the entire Moon-Shadowed Pack-to that girl.
