Sabrina was visibly flustered, grabbing onto Martin's arm.
“Martin, say something to the police! How did things turn out like this? I’m not... I didn’t...”
Bella shot a venomous glare at Lillian. She never expected Lillian to be so ruthless.
In public, in front of everyone in their circle, she had brought in the police and created such a scene, completely disregarding the Mercer family's reputation.
Now, everyone knew her mother was a mistress, and that Martin had taken his wife and daughter's jewelry to give to them.
Just moments ago, Bella had been basking in the glory of receiving and showing off the jewelry. Now, she was just as humiliated as she had been triumphant.
She could feel the curious gazes from all around. She had always been at the forefront of her industry, accustomed to flattery, but she knew how many people were waiting to see her fall.
She hadn't stumbled in her professional life, but now she had tripped over something like this.
Bella ripped the diamond necklace from her neck and threw it at Lillian.
Lillian’s brow furrowed, but with quick reflexes, she caught the necklace.
It was her mother's treasured jewelry; she couldn't let it get damaged.
Even so, as she held it, she saw that Bella had broken the clasp.
Lillian, already furious, now looked at Bella with an even darker expression.
Bella said to the police, “Officer, this was all a misunderstanding. My mother and I didn't take the jewelry ourselves, and it has now been returned.”
As she spoke, she walked over to Sabrina, unfastened the jewelry from her neck, ears, and wrist, and thrust it into Martin's hand.
“Mr. Mercer,” she said sharply, “I don't know if you genuinely care for us or if you were just trying to placate us. If you truly cared, why would you give us secondhand things?
And Mom, you're unbelievable. It's bad enough to accept a secondhand man, but now you're taking secondhand jade and diamonds too?”
With that, Bella pulled Sabrina’s hand from Martin’s grasp and started to leave.
“This has nothing to do with us, so we won't be staying. Officer, if you need our cooperation, please contact my lawyer.
The items weren't stolen and have been returned to their owner. I believe that means we are not criminal suspects and can decline to go to the station, correct?”
Bella then tried to lead Sabrina away.
“Stop,” Lillian’s voice rang out sharply.
She stepped in front of Bella.
She held up the broken clasp for her to see. “Everyone here saw Miss Ward damage this. You don't deny it, do you? When my mother acquired this diamond necklace, it was worth thirty million. With appreciation, it's worth at least thirty-five million now. This clasp was custom-made by hand. The master craftsman who made it is long gone, making its value immeasurable. Even with a formal appraisal, a custom repair would cost at least four to five million. That’s a debt you need to pay, isn't it?
