Upstairs, Leonard carried Lillian into her room and laid her on the bed.
The moment he set her down, Lillian, with her eyes still glazed over, grabbed his collar and pulled. Leonard, caught off balance, stumbled and fell onto her.
They were suddenly in a full embrace.
Lillian’s lips brushed against his ear. “Leaving so soon? Am I not beautiful?”
Beautiful? Of course she was beautiful.
The first time Leonard had seen Lillian in person, she had been completely without makeup, yet her natural beauty had stunned him.
He found Lillian's teasing impossible to resist.
The warm breath on his ear was like a spark igniting a fire in his veins.
Leonard’s mouth was dry, as if he had been wandering in a desert for weeks.
He wanted to lean in closer, but a final shred of rationality held him back.
“How much did she drink?”
Ethan, who had followed them up, had been about to retreat after seeing the scene but had to answer. “I heard it was just one glass.”
Leonard realized the gravity of the situation.
There was no way Lillian could get this drunk from a single glass of wine.
At first, he had been worried about her drinking because of her illness and the medication she was taking daily.
He thought she was being careless with her health, but one glass wasn't excessive.
However, to be in this state after just one glass meant her drink had been spiked.
Leonard managed to pull away slightly, then wrapped Lillian tightly in the duvet like a burrito.
He then ordered, “Get the doctor.”
There was always a doctor on call at the villa, even at night. Ethan was shocked. “You don’t think Ms. Mercer’s drink had something in it, do you?”
Leonard's temper flared. “You know that, so why are you still standing there?”
Ethan didn't even wait for the elevator, rushing down the stairs to get the doctor.
The doctor came up, assessed Lillian’s condition, and quickly administered an injection.
He also instructed the maids to give her plenty of water.
Once Lillian had settled down, Leonard finally sat in the armchair nearby.
He sat with his legs crossed, a habit that concealed any unease.
His eyes burned with anger.
“Why weren't you with her?” he demanded.
Ethan stood with his head bowed like a scolded child. “Sir, I thought Emma was with her, and Mr. Cole was there too. I didn't think anything would happen.”
Leonard asked, “And Nathan?”
“Mr. Cole also left early. He seemed to have had quite a bit to drink.”
“I ask you to look after one person, and you can't even do that?”
“Sir, this really isn’t our fault. No one could have predicted this. Ms. Mercer doesn't usually drink. Today was an exception because of...”
While the doctor was examining Lillian, Ethan had already gotten the full story.
