When Lillian woke up in the morning, she was startled to find several maids in her room.
She shot up in bed. “What’s going on?”
“Ms. Mercer, you’re awake. How are you feeling?”
Lillian looked down and saw she was wearing a comfortable set of pajamas.
Presumably, the maids in the room had changed her.
Lillian wasn't particularly bothered by it.
A maid quickly handed her a glass of water. “Ms. Mercer, please have some water. The doctor instructed that you should drink plenty of water when you wake up to help your body metabolize everything faster.”
Lillian was even more confused.
“Metabolize faster? Why?”
Before she could finish her sentence, Leonard appeared to clear things up.
As he explained, Lillian’s brow furrowed deeper and deeper.
She had only had one glass of wine last night, and she had taken it from a passing waiter’s tray. It was completely random.
How could she have ended up with a drink that had been tampered with?
Was it just a coincidence?
“I had someone check the surveillance footage last night,” Leonard said. “We haven’t found anything suspicious so far. It seems random.
But usually, when something like this happens and it appears random, it’s a sign that there’s a problem.
It looks like you’ll have to be more careful when you attend these events from now on.”
“I understand,” Lillian said. “It seems I really do need to be more cautious.”
Leonard nodded. As he looked at Lillian’s face, a flash of a memory from the night before shot through his mind, causing his cheeks to burn red.
He quickly turned away. “I won’t keep you from getting ready. Emma drove your car back last night. She’s probably already here to pick you up for work this morning.”
“Okay,” Lillian replied, but then a thought struck her.
She had no memory of what had happened last night, but if she had consumed something... tainted, wouldn’t there have been some kind of reaction?
Lillian suddenly called out to Leonard. “I didn’t... make a fool of myself last night, did I?”
Leonard’s throat tightened. He kept his back to her. “Of course... of course not.”
He practically fled the room after saying that.
Lillian trusted Leonard completely. If he said nothing happened, then nothing happened, and she put it out of her mind.
She got out of bed, feeling no particular discomfort. It seemed that drinking a lot of water was all it took to flush it out of her system.
After breakfast, Lillian took the driver’s seat herself.
She was already running late, and if she let Emma drive at her usual leisurely pace, she would miss the interviews for several IT positions scheduled for that morning.
Just as Lillian pulled up to her company’s entrance, she spotted a familiar car.
Sebastian’s Rolls-Royce was parked right there.
Indeed, their two companies weren’t far apart—only a ten-minute drive.
Litech NaLabs was even closer, just a ten-minute walk, one building over.
After parking her car, Lillian walked over.
Sebastian and Noah got out of the car and headed towards her.
It had been a while since Lillian had seen Noah, and to be honest, her heart ached for him.
