Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 129

Brandon seemed to have forgotten that not long ago, the entire family had been clamoring to disown Lillian.

Colin didn't press the issue further. He had little say in this family anyway.

He stood by, listening as Brandon made the call.

To ensure Lillian would pick up, Brandon had a whole arsenal of SIM cards, pulling one from his pocket.

When the call connected, Brandon, fearing she would hang up, got straight to the point.

“Lillian, you promised Dad you’d help with the divorce papers. It’s been a week with no news. Are you backing out?”

“He’s that desperate? He can’t even wait a week?”

Martin was indeed desperate. Forget a week; the slightest hint of displeasure from Sabrina would set him off.

After so many years of sneaking around, the moment the idea of marriage became a possibility, he couldn’t bear to wait another day.

Brandon knew this all too well.

“Lillian, you’ve already agreed. Mom and Dad’s divorce is going to happen sooner or later. There’s no point in dragging it out. Let them both be free.”

The words sounded ridiculous to Lillian.

“You really are his good son. Don’t worry, I’ll go to Midvale this weekend. But before I go, I have two notarized documents that I need you and Colin to sign. I hope you won’t disappoint me.”

Lillian’s words immediately put Brandon on high alert. “What documents?”

“Documents waiving your right to contend for Mom’s guardianship.”

Brandon’s tone turned serious. “Lillian, after the divorce, Mom’s assets will increase significantly. Are you asking me and Colin to give up...”

Lillian couldn't listen anymore.

Who was it that kept saying this was for her own good, that was for her own good?

How was it that the moment money was mentioned, all that concern for her vanished?

If it was for her own good, why not just give her mother’s assets to her? Why was he so anxious about it?

She cut Brandon off. “Mom already had her will notarized. Her assets will be distributed according to her wishes...”

As she said this, something clicked in Lillian’s mind.

When her mother had her will notarized, she had been deep in the pain of her husband's affair.

For her to make a will at that time... could it be...

Lillian thought back carefully, the sound of Brandon’s voice on the other end of the line fading into the background.

She pieced together the timeline in her head. Not long after her mother made the will, she was injured in a fight with that mistress, Sabrina Ward, and ended up with a mental illness.

But her mother was so young back then. Why would she suddenly think of making a will?

He had no experience comforting a crying girl; he didn't know where to start or what to do.

At that moment, seeing Leonard, Lillian forgot about the awkwardness between them. She buried her face in his shoulder and let herself cry her heart out.

Leonard didn't know what to do, so he just stood there, letting her cry on him. He could feel the warmth and dampness of her tears through his shirt, but he didn't move. He gently patted her back, a simple gesture of comfort.

When Ethan came to check on the situation, Leonard subtly waved him away, signaling him not to disturb them.

After Lillian finished crying, Leonard handed her a tissue. “I’ve never been good at comforting people. I really don’t know what to say.”

Lillian shook her head. She didn't need comfort.

She just felt so stupid.

If she had noticed sooner, maybe she could have prevented her mother from having a breakdown.

This wasn't some dark secret she couldn't share.

After listening, Leonard looked at her apologetically. “You really shouldn't blame yourself. You were too young at the time, with not enough experience or understanding of the adult world. It’s not your fault you didn’t notice. The blame lies entirely with the ones who caused it.”

“Yes,” Lillian whispered, her voice hardening. “It’s Martin and Sabrina’s fault. It’s their fault!”

If there had been no affair, no mistress, her mother would never have ended up like this.

Lillian called back. When Brandon answered, she made a demand...
