On any other matter, Brandon might have backed down. But this was about shares, something directly tied to his future control of the company.
Lillian had been favored by their grandmother and mother since birth, and Martin had also doted on his precious daughter.
As a result, she had been given more shares than her brothers.
Brandon had accepted it back then because he genuinely loved his little sister. He never imagined his full-blooded siblings would turn against him over shares, especially with Colin as an example of loyalty. He had never felt a sense of crisis.
But this was different.
Sabrina and Bella were not his own flesh and blood. Transferring such a large number of shares to them could create a major obstacle for him down the line.
For the first time, Brandon defied Martin without a hint of retreat.
“If you think that’s an order, then so be it,” Brandon said, his voice firm. “You’re my father, so maybe I don’t have the right. But these are the Mercer family’s shares. They should have never fallen into the hands of outsiders.”
Martin was fuming. His eldest son had always been obedient, his pride and joy. To think he would be challenged like this today, all over some shares.
“You bastard! I’m your father! How dare you speak to me like that?”
“That’s right, you’re my father, and you always will be,” Brandon retorted. “When you had an affair and openly shacked up with another woman, you said you were under a lot of pressure, that she was your first love, and that only with her could you find some peace.
To keep you in a good mood, Colin and I forgave you and covered for you.
When you injured Mom, we had no choice but to forgive you again.
When you insisted on being with Sabrina, we considered your feelings and agreed.
But you can’t just completely disregard the three of us, your children, can you?
Give them money, give them a house, anything, we wouldn’t say a word. But you just gave away the company’s shares without a thought for us.
And what’s more, those shares belonged to Lillian.
If Grandma ever wakes up and finds out you gave Lillian’s shares to that mother and daughter, what do you think she’ll do?”
Martin was livid. “The doctors already said your grandmother will never wake up! She’s in a vegetative state, a living corpse! What, is it your turn to lecture me now?
I’m your father!
I’m not dead yet, and I’m still in charge of the Mercer family!
Since I’m in charge of the family and the company, I can give the shares to whomever I please! I gave shares to my wife.
What right do you two brats have to interfere?
Besides, I’ve watched Bella grow up.
Even if you do have another child, shouldn’t you wait until the baby is born to make these decisions?
If you really did give us a new brother or sister, and you gave shares to Sabrina and the child, we would have no reason to object.
But to just give away Lillian’s shares like this... I can’t agree with it either, just like Brandon.”
Martin slammed his hands on the table and roared, “You’ve all turned against me! This is still my company! It’s not your turn to be in charge yet, so you two don’t get a say!
And whether Sabrina and I have a child is none of your business!
How dare you curse us, saying we can’t have one? You’d be happy if we couldn’t, wouldn’t you?”
Brandon was incensed. “Even if you can have a child, I’m not sure I’d support it now.
For one, you’re both older and won’t have the energy to care for a baby.
Second, the three of us are the designated heirs to the group, and the distribution of shares has already been decided.
If you and Sabrina have another child now, all of that will have to be adjusted.
You’re not thinking of adjusting my and Colin’s shares after you’ve already given away Lillian’s, are you?”
