“Brandon, is the Lancaster family really that important?”
“Of course. They’ve been entrenched in Midvale for generations. While their location can’t compare to Northwyn, their financial resources are immense. I had someone look into them, and though the report wasn’t exhaustive, the tip of the iceberg was enough to show how formidable they are. We really overlooked them in the past. If we hadn’t, we wouldn’t have fumbled such a winning lead.”
“Brandon, I’ll follow your lead. Whatever you decide, I’ll do.”
“Dad’s still just sitting in his office. Should we go talk to him?”
Brandon nodded.
As soon as Brandon and Colin walked in, Martin had a good idea of what the two brothers were thinking.
“At a time like this, Dad, are you still trying to protect that woman? You married her, and you want to protect her. We get that, and we can understand it. But you’ve seen the company’s situation. You spent all day trying to save it, right? How did that work out? You know the answer.
“I’ve been saying it all along: having Sabrina issue an apology is the key to solving this problem. If we don’t even show a willingness to take responsibility for our mistakes, how can the public trust the Mercer Group? Once that basic trust is gone, who would dare invest in us?
“And you can stop thinking up other schemes. They won’t work. Lillian has the Lancaster family backing her now. You can’t touch her. And don’t think for a second the Lancasters have gone home. They’re still here, I’m telling you. I don’t know if they found out Lillian was sick, but they’re all staying here to be with her. So if you’re thinking she’s about to go bankrupt anytime soon, you’re wrong. She’s doing just fine.”
Martin scoffed. “Have you forgotten the situation? Bella and Sebastian are already planning their wedding. If you have Sabrina make a public apology now, wouldn’t that be a public humiliation for the Blake family?”
“The Blake family, the Blake family—that’s all you ever talk about! The next heir to the Blake family is your own grandson. And the relationship between the Blake and Mercer families was maintained by your own daughter, Lillian—the one you despise.
“Who cares about Bella and her marriage to Sebastian? What does that have to do with us? Don’t forget, the Blake elders still don’t like her. If this whole thing makes the wedding fall through, then so be it.”
For a moment, Martin seemed unusually sharp. “Fall through? Noah is still young, but Sebastian is in his prime. No matter who he marries, he will marry again and have more children.”
