During the latter half of the night, Emilia still woke up with a start, but less frequently than before.
And every time she woke up, she was filled with a sense of security.
Because when she opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was Theodore.
She was surrounded by his scent, and she could feel his presence.
They held each other like that until morning.
When she opened her eyes again, sunlight streamed through a gap in the curtains, landing perfectly on Theodore's face beside her.
This time, Emilia had woken up naturally, not startled, so Theodore hadn't noticed yet.
This was the best night's sleep she'd had in days.
Ever since that day at the apartment, she had been afraid of strangers and terrified of physical contact.
At night, whenever she closed her eyes, she was plagued by endless nightmares.
She knew this couldn't go on, but she was helpless to stop it.
But last night had been better.
She still woke up startled, but she was, at least, getting better.
Emilia reached out and lightly traced Theodore's eyebrows with her finger, then his high-bridged nose.
It felt surprisingly fun.
A small smile played on her lips. Just as she was about to move her hand away, Theodore caught it and slowly opened his eyes.
Having just woken up, his eyes held a certain intensity that made her feel a little awkward, and she turned her face away.
But Theodore just chuckled.
His voice was soft, with the unique rasp of a voice in the morning.
“Good morning, Emilia,” he said.
Emilia glanced up at him and said, “Good morning.”
His hand was still resting on her waist, and when she looked at him, she found he was still watching her.
She quickly averted her gaze, not daring to look at him again.
His hand moved up to smooth her messy hair.
Then, he cupped her face and drew closer.
Emilia’s body tensed as his lips landed on her forehead.
She let out a silent sigh of relief, but in the next moment, his lips moved down to hers, and he kissed her.
She instinctively tried to push him away, but he had already let her go.
