But Theodore still shook his head.
He was already consumed with regret for not realizing Tyler had taken her, for not getting her back sooner, for letting her get hurt.
He refused to let go of her hand when she was at her most vulnerable.
Theodore looked at Emilia.
In truth, what happened that day wasn't just her trauma, her nightmare; it was his as well.
Regret and self-blame.
It was all tearing him apart.
He had been exiled to the sea as a teenager. Over the years, he had seen and experienced too much. Expanding his influence on the high seas was no easy task. In many ways, he had become accustomed to life and death.
He had seen countless people die before him; he himself had nearly died on several occasions.
After all that, he thought he had become unflappable. But this time, he was scared.
He wasn't afraid that she had slept with Tyler. That day in the apartment, he was filled more with heartache for her.
She and Tyler had been together for seven years and even had children together once. He knew exactly what they had done, and he was jealous of all of it.
What he was afraid of was that she would destroy herself, that she would disappear from this world.
He couldn’t bear to imagine that happening.
If it ever did… he didn't know what he would become.
Perhaps even more unhinged than Tyler.
Theodore gripped Emilia’s hand tightly, his eyes red-rimmed, his voice hoarse and humble. “Give me a chance. Let me stay by your side, please?”
Emilia’s heart fluttered.
She could feel his emotions.
She understood what he meant.
In the dim light, he looked so different from the composed, strategic Theodore she saw during the day.
Right now, he looked humble and worn down, with an almost imperceptible darkness about him. It was a morbidly calm, obsessive intensity.
As Emilia looked at him, it felt like she was seeing a completely different side of him.
Finally, she said, “Okay.”
Then, she shifted over in the bed.
