She knew Theodore had heard Tyler's desperate shout, just as she had.
But she didn't say a word.
Theodore remained silent as well.
Bzzzt... Bzzzt...
A phone started vibrating.
Emilia glanced around and realized two phones were going off simultaneously.
One was Theodore's, the other was Cindy's.
They both pulled out their phones, exchanging confused looks.
Emilia caught a glimpse of Theodore's screen. Tyler's name was flashing on the caller ID.
And Cindy's phone showed a call from Christian.
Emilia furrowed her brow. What was going on?
Just then, her own phone started buzzing in her pocket.
She pulled it out and saw Joyce's name.
When she looked up, she saw her own confusion mirrored in Theodore's eyes.
The elevator plummeted rapidly toward the ground floor.
Meanwhile, in the adjacent shaft, another elevator was chasing them down.
Inside were Tyler and Israel.
Beep... Beep...
After his call to Theodore was rejected, Tyler dialed again immediately, but it still wouldn't connect.
In the other elevator, Emilia answered Joyce's call.
"Joyce?" Emilia asked gently. "What's wrong?"
"Emilia... sob..." Joyce was crying so hard she could barely breathe.
"Hey, don't cry." Panic flared in Emilia's chest, terrified that something terrible had happened to Joyce or Felix.
She soothed her, "What happened? Take a deep breath and tell me. Whatever it is, we can fix it."
"It's not me... sob... Emilia, it's you," Joyce wailed, her heart breaking.
Even now, Emilia was still worrying about her, still comforting her.
"Emilia, what happened in the stairwell that day... it wasn't an accident."
Joyce choked on her tears. "It was Vivienne."
"It's all my fault," Joyce sobbed uncontrollably. "I gave her the opening. I was so caught up in the fight that I didn't even notice her dragging you toward the stairs... and then... and then..."
