"We have officially issued arrest warrants for Vivienne and Eugene," Cynthia told Emilia from across the table.
Emilia put her phone away and looked at the detective.
"Understood," she nodded.
"Please be extra careful these next few days," Cynthia warned. "A cornered dog will jump a wall. They might make a desperate move against you."
Emilia nodded in agreement.
So it was Vivienne and Eugene all along.
She recalled the cryptic warning Eugene had given her before he left the company.
At the time, she thought it was just a strange question, but now it was clearly a threat.
After wrapping up her conversation with Cynthia, Emilia walked out of the coffee shop.
She opened the passenger door and slid into the car.
Theodore was behind the wheel. Seeing her complicated expression, he asked, "Is everything alright?"
Emilia recounted the situation with Eugene.
Theodore listened closely, his brow furrowing.
"I did hear some rumors about why Tyler fired him," Theodore noted.
"They said it was corruption and leaking company secrets, but mostly the leaks."
"Leaking secrets?" Emilia found that even more bizarre.
"Yeah," Theodore said, putting the car into drive. "I'll have my people look into it further."
The car merged smoothly into traffic.
...
Ever since Tyler sent that text, he hadn't taken his eyes off his screen.
He was a bundle of nerves.
He had no idea when Emilia would reply.
What would she say?
Or maybe she would just ignore him completely.
His car continued down the highway.
Just when he was convinced she wasn't going to respond.
Buzz.
The phone vibrated in his palm.
He unlocked it instantly.
She had replied.
Just two words.
[Thank you.]
It was painfully polite.
