"And the second she got her family's legacy back, she didn't even take a breath before launching her new company."
"And as if the grand opening wasn't enough, she announced her wedding on the exact same day just to twist the knife."
Owen shook his head, a begrudging sense of awe creeping into his voice.
"She's decisive, she doesn't leave any loose ends, and she is absolutely ruthless," Owen pointed out. "Do you honestly think a woman like that is going to 'understand' your excuses?"
There was one more thing Owen held back.
He was legitimately terrified Tyler would have a total mental breakdown right there in the booth.
He wanted to ask—"Do your precious reasons make up for all the hell you put her through?"
Owen had only known bits and pieces before, but lately, the rumors had been loud enough that he had pieced together the horrifying truth.
Regardless, he was still Tyler's best friend, which meant he had to stand by him.
Still, he genuinely believed that the past was the past, and the best move was just to set Tyler up with a fresh face.
Tyler stopped talking and put his drink down.
He sat in absolute silence.
The neon lights of PIH pulsed erratically through the glass.
The heavy bass from the dance floor below vibrated through the floorboards.
Tyler didn't dare think about it.
He was terrified to even entertain the 'what if' that Owen had just laid out.
He knew it would completely break him.
For weeks, he had clung to his secret motives like a drowning man clutching the last piece of driftwood.
If he lost that too...
"She won't," Tyler finally rasped, his voice rough. "She will definitely understand me."
They had survived so much together. They had literally faced death, and they had shared two children. She would understand him. She had to.
As long as he caught Eugene.
Owen stared at him, utterly exhausted by the man's delusion.
He gave up. Once Emilia actually walked down the aisle, Tyler would have no choice but to face reality.
However...
Watching Tyler self-destruct made Owen realize he probably needed to be a little more proactive with his own sugar baby.
Word on the street was that his little plaything's career was taking off, complete with a flashy new promotion.
It gave Owen a weird sense of impending doom.
