Meanwhile, in a luxury penthouse across town.
Frederick Donovan was listening to his own intelligence briefing.
"Are we absolutely certain Emilia Dennis is going after Aegis Dynamics?" Frederick asked, glancing at his secretary.
"Yes, sir," the secretary nodded, handing over a dossier.
"Perfect." Frederick scanned the document, a cold, mocking smirk twisting his lips. "I'm going to make her beg for my mercy."
...
Time slipped away in the quiet office.
Emilia woke up with a violent start.
Her eyes snapped open. Sunlight was already flooding the room. Panicking, she scrambled to check her watch.
"You're fine, we have time," a soothing voice said.
Emilia looked up and realized she had slept the entire time on Theodore's shoulder.
A flush of embarrassment hit her. She quickly sat up, frantically rubbing his shoulder, terrified she had cut off his circulation.
"It's good that you're up, though," Theodore smiled, rolling his shoulder to work out the stiffness. "Assistant Vance just dropped off a fresh change of clothes. Go freshen up and get dressed. You need to head to Aegis Dynamics soon."
"Right," Emilia said, instantly snapping back to reality.
She grabbed the garment bag and rushed to the executive washroom. Theodore stepped out into the bullpen and gently woke Ray.
Seeing the time, Ray bolted upright, instantly shifting into high gear.
Theodore left the rest of the exhausted staff asleep, quietly instructing Assistant Vance to arrange a massive breakfast spread for when they woke up.
The morning sun was fully up by the time Emilia and Ray were ready to leave.
Emilia paused, gently shaking a few of her senior managers awake.
"We're heading to Aegis now," she whispered. "Keep your phones on just in case. Theodore ordered breakfast. Eat something when you get up."
Getting groggy nods of confirmation, Emilia gave Theodore a grateful smile before marching out with Ray.
Rush hour traffic was brutal.
Both Emilia and Ray were clutching massive iced coffees.
Ray was still stifling yawns.
Emilia stared out the window.
The sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue. The sun was blindingly bright.
"Trust me, I'm not acting recklessly," Emilia said, her voice dropping to a serious hum. "I know they're hiding a massive sinkhole, and I'm not stupid enough to just jump in blind."
"Honestly, if I didn't absolutely need this leverage, I wouldn't touch this project with a ten-foot pole."
Tara stared at her, studying her face for a long, heavy moment. "Is this about that massive overseas order Aegis just announced? The shell company behind it?"
Emilia said nothing, refusing to confirm or deny.
"Emilia, my grandfather made it as clear as he possibly could," Tara pleaded, her professional mask slipping. "Being alive is more important than anything else. Stop digging into your father's death."
Emilia let out a slow, tired breath. Without a word, she stepped forward and pulled Tara into a tight hug.
Neither of them spoke, but the silence carried everything that needed to be said.
Emilia quickly pulled away.
She offered a single, resolute nod.
"Wish me luck?" Emilia asked softly.
Tara hesitated, but finally gave a defeated nod, reaching out to squeeze Emilia's shoulder.
"Good luck," Tara whispered.
