Theodore watched her carefully.
He hated seeing her subjected to the internet's vitriol, even though he knew her armor was impenetrable.
He also knew she fiercely guarded her independence; she didn't want him fighting her battles.
Partially because this was Inceptus's debut project.
And partially to lay the groundwork for their equal partnership in the future.
Still...
Theodore lowered his eyes, his mind spinning a dark, intricate web.
"What are you thinking about?" Emilia asked.
Theodore smiled, an enigmatic gleam in his eye. "Just thinking about how to make a few people deeply regret their life choices."
Emilia arched an eyebrow.
She knew perfectly well that beneath his refined, aristocratic exterior, Theodore was a ruthless apex predator. You didn't build an empire by playing nice.
They bantered effortlessly as they finished their meal.
"Head home and get some sleep. The office is basically shutting down for the afternoon anyway," Theodore urged gently. "I'll have Assistant Vance drive you. If anything comes up, Wilma will wake you."
"Alright," Emilia agreed.
...
The scandal accelerated.
By the afternoon, the financial circles were buzzing with nothing else.
Emilia's phone rang incessantly.
She replied to a few key allies, then put the device on 'Do Not Disturb'.
The industry elites gossiped endlessly.
Watching the chaos unfold online, Chloe felt a euphoric high.
Drunk on her own victory, she dialed Raymond Kaufman's number.
Raymond had just flown back to Cerulion.
After his candid conversation with Emilia a few days prior, he had boarded a flight out. Emilia had even seen him off at the airport.
Exhausted from a grueling schedule, Raymond collapsed onto his king-sized bed just as his phone rang.
"No thoughts?" Chloe's fantasy shattered. Her voice spiked with irritation. "She just torched a hundred and fifty million dollars, and you have no thoughts?"
Raymond lazily swung his legs out of bed and poured himself a drink. "She'll handle it."
Chloe gripped her phone, her knuckles turning white. "You really trust her that much?"
Raymond took a slow sip, staring out at the Cerulion skyline.
"Yes," he said simply. "What exactly did you want me to say?"
Chloe gritted her teeth.
"Chloe, I made this explicitly clear to you before," Raymond warned softly. "Emilia and I are separated by a debt of blood. There is no future for us. You need to stop obsessing over this."
"I know that!" Chloe snapped.
She had known it ever since Raymond had confessed the truth of his past with Emilia.
But it burned her alive.
Why had Emilia been the one to reject him?
Why did Raymond still hold her on a pedestal, knowing she was entirely out of reach? Why did Raymond, and her own brother Tyler, still obsess over a woman who was about to marry Theodore Glenn?
