It wasn’t a serious injury–he’d seen and endured far worse during his time in the military. But he never wanted his wife to see it, to worry, or to be upset.
Damian had been careful to keep it hidden.
But earlier, when he’d carried her inside, Isabelle had brushed against the wound. He’d let out a low, almost imperceptible groan, and she’d noticed the slight tightening of his brow and caught the faint medicinal scent lingering on his shoulder.
Over the past few days, he hadn’t been as physically affectionate as usual–no deep kisses, only light touches.
Normally, he wasn’t one to hold back. Given the chance, he’d always been eager–since when had he ever been so restrained?
Isabelle had sensed something was off right away.
Even after returning home today, he hadn’t been very hands–on. After holding back for so long, Isabelle found it hard to believe he didn’t want more.
Just as she suspected–the man was hurt and hadn’t said a word.
“Why are you so stubborn?” Her voice trembled slightly.
Damian smiled, turned fully, and settled her onto his lap.
Here she was, crying for him.
The last time she’d cried in his arms was when she’d willingly given herself to him. Looking back now, that felt like a lifetime ago.
Gently, he brushed the tears from the corners of her
eyes.
She hadn’t cried even when she was badly injured herself, yet here she was, weeping over this minor wound of his.
He chuckled softly, holding her close and stroking her hair.
“Don’t cry. See? I’m perfectly fine,” Damian whispered near her ear, as if comforting a child.
Isabelle held him carefully, afraid of causing him more pain.

If she’d known Damian was injured, she wouldn’t have agreed to let Jonathan off so lightly- merely sending Sophia to manage a remote project.
Slowly, she loosened her embrace and asked, “Does it hurt?”
“It hurts terribly,” Damian said, lowering his gaze, his eyes deep and unreadable.
He added, “A kiss might make it feel better.”
Isabelle couldn’t help but laugh at his words and quickly pressed a light kiss to the corner of his mouth.
“Still hurt?” she asked playfully.
“That was over in a flash–didn’t even feel it,” Damian replied, his eyes on her slightly pink
nose.
Seeing he wasn’t satisfied, Isabelle peppered his lips with a series of soft, quick kisses.
“How about this? Or this…” she teased.
Damian’s gaze darkened. He cupped the back of her head and leaned in for a deeper, lingering kiss, his other hand settling firmly on her waist, the warmth seeping through her silk nightgown.
“Like this…”
Her eyes grew hazy, cheeks flushed.
The calm surface had been thoroughly stirred.
A long while later, she finally gently pushed him back.
“Let me apply the ointment properly…” She hadn’t realized her voice had softened to a honeyed tone, almost melting as she spoke.
Damian licked his lips, still wanting more. “Alright.”
Isabelle carefully stood and got a clearer view of the marks on his toned back.
She picked up the ointment from the desk, and Damian turned, obediently letting her tend to him.
It wasn’t that Damian didn’t desire her–he was just cautious of aggravating her own healing
wounds.

Isabelle didn’t press him either. With the injury on his back, she wasn’t sure he’d be comfortable in certain positions anyway.

For several days, the weather had been persistently damp, and her leg wasn’t healing as quickly as hoped.
The humidity hung thick in the air.
At night, her leg would ache fiercely–even shifting in her sleep risked scraping the tender skin, yet staying still made it grow stiff and numb.
Thankfully, Damian would wake intermittently to help her reposition her leg or cushion it with a pillow. Otherwise, she might have irritated the wound raw in her restless sleep.
Bathing was another chore–she had to carefully wrap her lower leg in a waterproof sleeve to keep it dry. If it got wet, the healing would only become more complicated.
She hadn’t left the house in days, but her leg was slowly improving, forming a scab relatively quickly.
Fortunately, the weather finally broke today, with the warmth of early summer beginning to settle in.
Feeling stir–crazy, she decided to visit the studio.
