Most of the gentlemen on the dance floor were quite proper, not daring to overstep their bounds. In a venue hosted by the Carmichaels, no one would be foolish enough to pull any disrespectful stunts right out in the open.
“You’ve been sitting alone for a while, Miss–are you waiting for someone?” The man dancing with Isabelle carried himself with a polished, gentlemanly air and maintained a respectful distance. His hand rested lightly on her waist, and his other hand held hers with just the right amount of pressure, their fingers barely linked.
“Yes, I’m waiting for someone,” Isabelle replied distractedly, her steps even faltering slightly.
“Have they arrived yet?”
Before Isabelle could fully grasp his meaning, the man continued, “Are you here by yourself?”
“No, I came with someone,” Isabelle said with a faint smile. That was precisely why she hadn’t been eager to joirr the dancing earlier.
The man seemed momentarily taken aback. “My apologies, I had no idea. You just didn’t seem to be with anyone.”
“May I go now?” Isabelle asked.
“Of course,” the man replied with a touch of regret, releasing her hand gently.
Just then, the music transitioned into a partner–switching segment. The moment she stepped away from that man, another—one with far less decorum–reached out and wrapped his arm firmly around her waist.
A wave of warmth spread from the point of contact, startling Isabelle and sending a slight shiver through her.
“Careful.”
A familiar, slightly husky voice sounded close to her ear.
By now, her hand was already clasped securely in the man’s large palm, and without conscious thought, her other hand had come to rest on his shoulder. The solid warmth of his body seeped into her skin.
A familiar, clean scent enveloped her.

She tilted her head up slightly and caught sight of a deep blue tulip blossom pinned discreetly to the man’s lapel. Looking further up, her gaze met his intense eyes. His well–defined lips curved into a faint, knowing smile right before her.
This man was Damian.
“What’s wrong? Were you enjoying your conversation with that other man so much that I don’t even get a turn?” Damian’s tone made it clear he wasn’t pleased.
“You said you’d stay out of my sight,” Isabelle shot back, frustration simmering beneath her composure.
Damian’s brow furrowed slightly. “There’s a deal worth several hundred million on the line here tonight–I couldn’t exactly skip it. Besides, I didn’t know for sure you’d be here.”
“Really?” Isabelle didn’t believe a word of it.

Given tris meticulous nature, he would have reviewed the guest list thoroughly how could he not know whether the wes attending?
“I’ve nearly lost in love, I should alleast hold onto my career I still have to provide for my wife and child. If i don’t go out and wor I’ll be kicked out of the house for good.”
You already have been. Isabelle thought, but didn’t voice it.
She stayed silent, allowing the man’s arm to remain around her.
But their position was undeniably intimate–to any onlooker, it appeared he was being rather possessive
‘Isabelle, I miss you both,” Damian murmured softly, the corners of his eyes faintly tinged with red.
He savored this brief moment of closeness, his gaze carefully tracing the contour of the woman before him.
‘onight wasn’t a waste after all. He’d seen the person he longed for and held the wife he’d been dreaming of. He was content–he new better than to push for more right now.
sabelle didn’t respond to his words, treating them as if he were merely speaking to himself.
he soft, melodic music continued to flow through the grand ballroom. Isabelle wasn’t a practiced dancer and stepped on his olished shoes several times.
Damian bore the minor discomfort without a flinch, holding her a fraction closer.
sabelle knew she was being clumsy, but a small, petty part of her felt a spark of satisfaction–stepping on him felt oddly justified.
Ease up a little…”
sabelle reminded him, but the words, spoken almost without thought, brought a flush of warmth to her own cheeks.
Damian had used a similar phrase in far more intimate circumstances before.
he man let out a soft, knowing chuckle, understanding the reason for her blush, and loosened his grip just slightly, careful pot to old her too tightly.
sabelle turned with the flow of the other dancers and found herself seamlessly back in the man’s embrace

Want to head home together later?” he ventured.
le knew Isabelle would almost certainly refuse, but he wanted to find more reasons to talk to her. He missed the sound of her oice speaking to him–even a few sharp words would have been a gift.
‘You haven’t earned that right,” Isabelle shot him a pointed look.
The music signaled another partner change. Damian glanced sideways and spotted Collin moving purposefully through the dancers nearby.
Damian had no intention of switching. Instead, he smoothly guided Isabelle directly off the dance floor
Nearby, Collin watched them go, his jaw tightening with palpable frustration.
“Let go of me!” Isabelle tried to pull her hand free.
