Lynn couldn’t hide her joy, grinning as she ate.
Lucas ate quietly, lost in thought.

If Lynn had come to my house to call off the engagement and I’d known Joseph liked her back then, I would have le Joseph pursue her without hesitation.
Joseph knows Lynn better than I ever could–that’s something I can’t compete with.
But things were different now.
Everything had changed after that rescue mission–his attitude toward her had turned upside down.
Once a man who did whatever he wanted, Lucas now found his every move influenced by Lynn’s
emotions.
He’d strayed far from his original path, moving closer to her, merging his life with hers.
After dinner, Lynn and Lucas sat on the couch–Lucas working on his laptop, Lynn scrolling through her phone.
She noticed a new friend request: a cute profile picture, no note, and the location was Engster.
She leaned closer to Lucas, who naturally wrapped his arm around her shoulders, his thumb brushing her arm as he typed with his other hand.
“Look, I just got here, and someone added me–it says they scanned my QR code. Do you think my info was leaked? It feels scary being in a foreign country,” she muttered, holding up her phone.
Lucas glanced at it and let out a snort. “With a name like ‘Super Queen Lynn,‘ who’d even add you? A name like that makes you come off as nothing but trouble.”
He had her WhatsApp QR code–his grandfather had sent it to him when he’d first recommended Lynn.
Lynn pouted, opening Lucas‘ WhatsApp.
She’d saved his contact as “Brute” a long time ago and had forgotten his original username.
When she saw it, she laughed-“A Clumsy Deer.”
“Happy now?” Lucas asked, pinching her cheek.
Lynn snickered.
A clumsy deer–that was what she’d written on the bookmark she’d tucked in her book! He’d found it!
No wonder she’d never been able to find it–he’d taken it.
She said nothing, simply smiling as she thought that Lucas‘ emotional awareness had finally improved 3/3

little.
How rare.
However, her hand froze suddenly.
He must have read what I wrote on the bookmark!
She realized, looking up at him in alarm.
“What’s wrong?” Lucas asked.
“Nothing.” Lynn shook her head.
It didn’t really matter if he knew–they already understood each other’s feelings now, and those words were just a way to make him realize how arrogant he’d been back then.
“I need to go out for a bit–can you stay here alone?” Lucas asked, his eyes searching hers.
Lynn hesitated. She was scared to stay alone, especially at night.
Wandering around during the day was fine, but the darkness brought fear.
“Can I come with you? Where are you going?” she asked.
Lucas thought for a moment. “No, it’s too cold outside. Stay here and wait for me–I’ll be back as soon as I
can.”
Lynn nodded stiffly. “Be careful, then.”
Patting her head to comfort her, Lucas lifted her into bed. Holding her close, he hummed softly until her breathing evened out.
Once she was asleep, he quietly put on his coat and slipped out the door.
However, sleep didn’t last long.
Curling up under the covers, Lynn tossed and turned before finally getting up to lock the door and turn on every light. Settling by the window, she watched the night view.
Engster’s winter was romantic, day and night–no wind blew, and faint streetlights were covered in a thin layer of snow, creating a soft, hazy scene.
Suddenly, two figures holding black umbrellas appeared in her line of sight.
The dark umbrellas added a touch of gloom to the pristine white snow as they moved slowly, their footprints sinking into the powder.
Putting on her glasses for a better look, Lynn felt her heart skip a beat–one of the men looked exactly like Lucas.

Staring intently, she confirmed it was him.
Dressed in a black coat and holding a black umbrella, he walked with quick, purposeful strides.

Beside him walked a woman, also clutching a black umbrella, struggling to keep up and tripping every few
steps.
Lucas didn’t look back, nor did he glance at her; he simply kept moving forward.
What is he doing out there? I should have asked.
Lynn pouted as she watched the two umbrellas disappear into the snowy night, illuminated only by faint moonlight.
Her attention fell on the perfume Daisy had given her, which sat on the bedside table.
Picking it up. Lynn sniffed it again to ensure it wasn’t her imagination, then sprayed a little on her wrist.
Leaning in, she thought she’d sprayed too little to detect anything, so she applied some more.
“What kind of cheap perfume is this? It has no scent at all, she muttered.
Thinking little of it. Lynn dabbed the excess on her earlobes before climbing back into bed and drifting
off.
Hours later, Lynn woke up, sweating. Kicking off the covers and pulling at her neckline to cool down, she rolled over and fell back into a deep sleep.
