She put on the cotton shoes the man had provided, endured her aching body, dressed, and stepped our of the room.
As Daisy opened the door, she realized it wasn’t a typical hotel room. It was a penthouse
It didn’t look like anyone actually lived here, but it was clean and neat, as if someone came by regularly to
clean.
She glanced back at the bed where she had spent a passionate night with him.
She left with only the dress she wore, not taking anything he had prepared.
Down in the hotel lobby, she couldn’t help asking the front desk, “I lost something on the top floor last night. Could I check the security footage?”
The two receptionists exchanged a glance. “I’m sorry, but the penthouse floor isn’t covered by cameras.”
Daisy felt a little awkward. “Does someone live up there?”
“No one lives on the top floor of our hotel.”
“Okay, thanks.” Daisy smiled politely and left.
The top floor was outside the surveillance cameras‘ range and unoccupied, so it seemed that the man from last night had also stumbled in by accident to change his clothes. That would explain why the lights were off.
She hurried back to her own place.
In front of the mirror, she held a birth control pill, tore open the wrapper, and swallowed it.
Though she doubted she would get pregnant, she took it just to be safe.
Then she regretted it. Her period came.
She curled up on the sofa by the floor–to–ceiling window, wrapped in a thick blanket, staring at the city lights.
Lynn called.
“Where have you been the last couple of days? You crashed your boyfriend’s car and he took you away for a lesson?”
Hearing Lynn’s voice, Daisy felt a wave of sadness. But this time, she didn’t dare say anything.
After the last incident, Adrian and Priscilla had hovered around her for a month, fearful of her reckless
behavior
This time, she decided to pretend nothing had happened.

She collected herself. “I’m on my period. I don’t feel like moving.”
“Oh, I thought something else.”
Daisy sounded uninterested.
“Do you want to come over?”
“No.”

“Isabelle is in the delivery room. I want to visit, but I don’t want to disturb her with too many people there. When are you free? Let’s go together?”
Daisy hesitated, and then replied, “I’ll go in a couple of days.”
“Okay, just call when you’re ready.”
She hung up, tossed her phone aside, and returned to sleep.
Upstairs in the penthouse, the man picked up a diamond earring from under a pillow. He rubbed it between his fingers, and then put it in his pocket.
He glanced at the flats on the floor.
She had left in high heels.
That afternoon, Damian messaged the group chat. “Isabelle had given birth to a baby boy, and both were doing well.”
Daisy smiled slightly, but tears fell unexpectedly.
She had secluded herself in the spacious apartment for over a week.
That evening, Lucas, Alaric, and Anthony gathered at the lounge bar, chatting idly.
Lucas had dragged Lynn along. She was on her phone, not interested in their conversation.
“I haven’t seen Ms. Clark around lately,” Alaric said, looking at Anthony.
Anthony remained expressionless.
Lynn overheard them mention Daisy. “She hasn’t dared to drive since the rear–end collision. Every time she goes out, her parents nag her to bring her boyfriend home for Christmas.”
She glanced at Anthony

“Oh!” Alaric said meaningfully.
Anthony paused, still expressionless.
Her car had already been driven back by Thomas, and she hadn’t returned home in several days.
The next day, Lynn visited Daisy’s apartment.
Daisy was in loungewear, surrounded by unfinished takeout in the living room.

“Feeling down? How many days‘ worth of takeout is this?” Lynn noticed the trash can still held last night’s refuse.
Daisy sat down and kept eating. “It’s cold out. I don’t want to cook. If not takeout, you’ll come cook for me?”
“I’d cook, but would you dare eat it?” Lynn laughed as she cleaned up.
In one corner of the living room were piles of packages Daisy had ordered for the new place, now stacked like a mountain, still unopened.
When she’d almost finished tidying, Lynn noticed a tie lying around.
“Did you buy this too?” Lynn asked, nudging the tie with her finger.
Daisy glanced over.
Somehow, she’d stuffed that tie in her pocket that day and brought it home. She’d meant to throw it away. but hadn’t bothered to go downstairs.
“This looks like Mr. Vale’s. I think I’ve seen him wear one before,” Lynn remarked, examining it closely.
Daisy froze, and then snatched the tie from her hand. “I bought it myself. My parents were pushing, so I pretended I got it for him. Now I have nowhere to throw it.”
