Daisy pulled her feet back, hesitant, but he gently grasped her ankle, removed her shoes, and put on new
ones.
She looked down at him, her heart fluttering at his touch, feeling warmth in both her ankle and heart.
Suddenly, she noticed something different about the left side of Anthony’s face.
After changing her shoes, he took the vegetables from her hand, and walked inside.
After putting the vegetables away, he turned and asked, “Where’s the guest room?”
Daisy was taken aback.
Guest room?
He’s going to stay here?
Um, isn’t this moving a little too fast?
Isn’t he rich? Why would he come live with me?
Daisy was dumbfounded. She couldn’t speak. She just pointed in a direction.
Anthony nodded, dragged his luggage inside, leaving Daisy standing motionless.
She put a hand over her chest. It was heaving. She couldn’t calm down. She shouldn’t have let Lynn run off.
She was in a panic.
Then she remembered something and hurried after him.
Anthony opened the first door. He started to step in, then paused and pulled his foot back.
It was a nursery. Daisy had already decorated it, pink, warm, so inviting that you didn’t want to disturb a single thing.
He looked at it for a long time. Daisy came to stand beside him, in front of another door. She pulled the door partly shut, as if trying to block him.
She softly suggested, “How about I book you a hotel nearby?”
Anthony turned and looked at her.
Daisy wasn’t tall, barely reached his chin.
He looked over her head and clearly saw, through the gap in the door, that the guest room was made up. On the bed lay his suit jacket, and the tie he’d used to blindfold her.

He reached past her ear and pushed the door open.
He looked down at her.
She felt too embarrassed to look at him.
“No need for that,” he said. “We’ll be living together eventually anyway.”
Daisy’s heart skipped.
He turned and walked in.
She stepped aside to make room.
Anthony put away his suitcase, took out clothes, and hung them in the closet.
Daisy didn’t know where to put herself. She wanted to hide.

He hadn’t said he was coming back. She didn’t know when he’d arrived or how long he’d been waiting outside.
She’d never met anyone so quiet.
When he’d finished unpacking, he saw Daisy still standing there.
He walked over and carefully pulled her into his arms.
She was slow to react, realizing she’d remained frozen in place.
By the time she realized, Anthony’s warm chest had enveloped her. His strong, steady heartbeat pounded against her ear.
She pushed him away, stepped back, paused for two seconds, and then walked out of the room, her face red.
Anthony lowered his hands.
He’d scared her.
This was only their second real meeting. She hadn’t kicked him out, that was already good.
Besides, Daisy probably just wanted a father for her children. Nothing more.
His expression darkened.
He had overstepped.
Swallowing his discomfort, he exited the room.
Daisy absentmindedly washed vegetables in the kitchen, still feeling the lingering warmth of the embrace.

“Let me do it.” Anthony’s voice came from beside her.
She glanced at him, and their eyes met.
“I just…” he began.
“I don’t like Brussels sprouts,” Daisy interrupted.
Like Isabelle, she hated Brussels sprouts.
“Okay.”
The brief exchange ended. They silently agreed to pretend nothing had happened.
Still shaken, she walked back to her room, closed the door, locked it, and hid under the covers.
Anthony watched her leave his line of sight, then turned and focused on making her a meal.

Daisy was about to text Lynn to curse her out when she saw that Lynn had already sent a dozen messages.
“Sorry, I should’ve just disappeared by now.” This message had arrived during Lynn’s escape.
Half an hour later, she texted, “How’s it going?”
“You two better avoid intense physical intimacy. You’re only two months pregnant, and it’s still unstable.”
“Why haven’t you replied to my messages? Are you two…?”
Daisy found herself both annoyed and amused.
She replied, “Lynn, shut up.”
Lynn replied instantly, “I thought you two couldn’t control yourselves.”
“Don’t go telling people.”
“I won’t. So? How is it?”
Still curled up in bed, Daisy typed, “He wants to live here. Why can’t he live at his place? I don’t want him
here.”
Lynn responded, “Why not? That sounds great.”
Daisy replied, “It’s not great. We’re not married or engaged, and now there are babies. If this gets out, what will people think of me?”
Lynn shot back, “He clearly wants to be the one moving in with you.”
