Harold’s heart was still pounding hard. “You weren’t scared at all today–what if you’d fallen off that horse? What would I have done then…?” He held her closer, almost as if he could still lose her.
He never wanted anything to happen to Zander–but he couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to her, either.
Claudia wasn’t sure where all this emotion was coming from. She softened into his embrace, wrapping her arms gently around him. “Zander is my son, too.”
“Next time, put yourself first,” Harold murmured into her hair.
“You’ve already lost Zander twice. If you let something like that happen again, I swear I’ll…”
Claudia lifted her head, ready to snap back, but his eyes were surprisingly tender.
Harold finished quietly, “I’m yours to punish.”
She couldn’t hold his gaze and looked away, half her irritation already melting.
Then–grrrumble–her stomach growled loudly.
He brushed her cheek with his thumb. “Go shower. I’ll have dinner brought up.”
“Okay,” Claudia nodded, then turned toward her room.

Harvey arrived at Zeke’s birthday party with Henrietta in tow. His new assistant, Dolores, had come along
too.
“So… do you like her?” Henrietta whispered as they walked in.
“No,” Harvey answered bluntly.
“Then why hire her?” Henrietta didn’t get it.
Dolores had called Henrietta the minute she got the job offer. But Henrietta knew the truth–the company had only recently been bought by her family, and Harvey had just stepped in to run things.
“She’s your best friend,” Harvey said, slipping off his jacket. “If I didn’t hire her, she’d complain to you, and you’d come home giving me grief.”
Dolores stepped forward smoothly and took his jacket, as if she’d done it a hundred times before. She didn’t seem to notice Harvey and Henrietta whispering.
“Take her and go have fun,” Harvey said, just as he spotted Molly heading his way.
“Thanks!” Henrietta beamed, turning to pull Dolores toward the buffet.

“Wait–Mr. Cross-” Dolores glanced back at Harvey.

“Forget Mr. Cross for now,” Henrietta laughed, tugging her along. “He wants you to look after me right
now.”
“Harvey!” Molly greeted him with a bright smile.
He frowned. “Which hospital is Keith in?”
“Oh-” She hadn’t expected that. Keith had been taken to the ER after the accident, but today was Zekes party–Molly had gotten her settled and come back.
Keith had broken her leg and would be stuck in bed for months.
Molly gave him the hospital name and room number.
Harvey nodded, took a phone call, and turned to leave.

“Hey-” Molly had only gotten out two sentences, and he was already walking away.
After finishing the call, Harvey said a quick goodbye to Brian and Zeke, dropped off his gift, and headed
out.
Dolores had barely started enjoying the party when Harvey called her to leave. Henrietta stayed behind.
Thinking they were heading back to the office for overtime, Dolores was surprised when the car pulled up at the hospital.
She followed Harvey to Keith’s room.
Keith was lying in bed, hooked to an IV. When she saw Harvey walk in, her face tightened with alarm.
Dolores was still holding Harvey’s jacket, assuming this was just a visit–until he turned to her and asked, “Do you know how to slap someone?”
“Excuse me?” Dolores froze.
Harvey’s voice was calm. “Slap her.”
Dolores just stared, unsure she’d heard right.
Harvey shot her a look that left no room for debate. “Or you can start looking for another job.”
Keith stared at Harvey in disbelief.
Dolores clenched her jaw, hesitated for a second, then stepped forward.
“Smack.”
Her palm left a red mark across Keith’s cheek.

“Wait outside,” Harvey told her.
Dolores hurried out and closed the door behind her.
Man, earning a paycheck shouldn’t be this hard.

Keith’s cheek burned, but she held her anger in. She couldn’t believe Harvey had just had someone slap her–and so casually.
Dolores hadn’t dared to hold back–better to get it over with in one go.
“Harold didn’t have the heart to do it, so I’m handling it for him,” Harvey said evenly. He pulled a chair over, sat down, and crossed his legs, resting his hands on his knees as he glanced at Keith’s elevated cast
“You always act so righteous when you’re the one hitting people, Harvey,” Keith said, bitterness seeping into her tone even as she tried to stay composed.
“That was just a slap. Next time, it could be worse.”
“People say you’re such a gentleman, Harvey. But behind closed doors, you’re no different from anyone else.”
Harvey replied flatly, “Then why is it I only act this way with you?”
For the first time, Keith felt a chill around Harvey.
He used to never get involved in other people’s drama. He didn’t even care what others said about him.
“I only took Zander riding. You think I wanted any of this to happen? What would I even gain from it?”
She’d had her reasons, of course.
“You think too highly of yourself,” Harvey said coolly. “That slap wasn’t about today.”
He stood and looked down at her. “You’ve spent a long time living well off my brother’s name. The only reason nobody bothered you was because he’s a decent guy who didn’t want you getting pushed around.”
