“He kept his mouth shut to spare your feelings, but you took it as a sign that he was into you. You ought to go take a long look in the bathroom mirror and see if you’re even in his league. And now you’ve got the nerve to try and get your grubby little hands on the Cross family. Zander got into trouble once because of you, and that wasn’t enough—you had to use him as a shield again. What, you think the way to hell is too long, and you need me to give you a push?”
Keith broke out in a cold sweat. She was at a loss for words.
She knew what Harold’s motives were back then. She just didn’t want to face it. She chose to play stupid.
Harvey watched her squirm now that she’d been exposed. “If that slap didn’t snap you out of it, next time I’ll do it myself.”
He spoke in the softest tone, but his actions were ruthless.
Harvey turned on his heel and left, his back looking cold and distant.
Keith crumpled onto the bed. She touched her cheek. It wasn’t just her face that ached–her heart was being squeezed painfully too.
The year Harold transferred to the new school, Keith had witnessed how tough he was.
She came from a small, poor town in the mountains. At the big–city school, she was constantly picked on.
One of the worst times was when a few school bullies cornered her in an alley. She screamed for help, but no one came to her rescue.
So she summoned up her courage and told them that Harold was her friend and would have her back.
The bullies were skeptical but a bit scared. They laughed at her and told her to take a good look at herself -why would Harold ever be friends with her?
As fate would have it, Harold and Harvey happened to walk by the alley.
Harold heard what she said and stopped in his tracks. He stood there until the bullies left.
He didn’t say a word. He just let her use his name to scare them off.
If it helped her, that was all that mattered.
Harvey frowned at Harold.
From that day on, the rumor that Keith knew Harold spread like wildfire around the school.
And it quickly turned from “knows” to “girlfriend“.
Because of that, Harold got chewed out by Damian when he got home. Damian thought it was way too early for him to have a girlfriend.

Harvey tried to explain it to Damian, but Harvey had defended Harold so many times that Damian didn’t buy it at all.
Keith became a bit of a school celebrity because of it.
A lot of people tried to butter her up. They asked how she’d gotten together with Harold. She didn’t say a thing. She also didn’t clear up the rumors. She was terrified of getting bullied again.
After Harold got scolded by Damian, he flat–out denied having any relationship with her.
And so Keith went through middle school quietly, carrying the label of Harold’s ex–girlfriend.
The two of them had barely seen each other three times.
Harold got tagged as being in a relationship.
And Keith seemed to fully embrace the role of Harold’s girlfriend.
Now, she wanted to become Harold’s real girlfriend.

Harvey found out what was going on. He knew Keith was trying to win Harold over by getting close to Zander, but it all went wrong.
She hadn’t messed with the horse. The horse was just high–strung to begin with, and it couldn’t stand the smell of her perfume. The moment she got on, something was off. Add to that Zander’s nervousness, which only made the horse more agitated, and that’s what set it off.
Harvey had Brian pull up the security footage from the equestrian center. He watched the heart–stopping scene of Claudia riding in to save Zander.
The moment Claudia drew her bow and took down the horse along with Harold, some strange anger welled up in Harvey’s chest.
That was why he couldn’t help but go over and slap her twice.
Thank goodness Claudia and Zander were okay. Otherwise, he would’ve made sure Keith disappeared for good.
Harvey stepped out of the hospital room, and Dolores quickly followed him.
“Mr. Cross, is she gonna call the cops on me?” Dolores was still shaken up.
Harvey let out a soft chuckle. Her question lightened his mood a bit. “No.”
“What if she actually calls the cops?”
“Then tell them it was me who hit her.”
“But I hit her pretty hard,” Dolores said, hurrying to keep up with Harvey as he stepped into the elevator.

“Then you need to bulk up,” Harvey said, pressing the button for the first floor.
He was hinting that her slap wasn’t hard enough.
Dolores was still scared just thinking about it.
“What’s your bank account number?” Harvey asked.

“I’ll send it to you,” Dolores said without hesitation. She pulled out her phone and sent him her account
number.
A moment later, fifty thousand dollars showed up in Dolores‘ account.
“Mr. Cross, this is…”
“Fighting money,” Harvey said, putting his phone away.
Dolores chased after him. “Mr. Cross, I promise I won’t hold back next time!”
Harvey smiled. This money–hungry little thing was just like Henrietta.
They got into the car together.

Claudia had just finished her shower when dinner was delivered. The servers were setting it up on the table.
She was starving. She walked out of the bathroom, drying her hair with a towel, and bumped right into Harold, who was coming out of the guest room.
Harold caught her by the waist. “Watch where you’re going.”
Claudia was startled. Her towel dropped to the floor.
He bent down, picked it up, and took her by the hand into the guest room.
“Mr. Cross…”
“Call me Harold.”
Ever since Harold moved into the guest room, Claudia had only been in there once–when she dropped off the clothes. She hadn’t been back since. This was the second time.
