Claudia glanced away, fiddling with the two unicorns in her hands, moving them around like they were little puppets putting on a
show
That was when it hit her–they were a matching set
“What made you decide to make these for me?”
Claudia had made unicorns herself before, but hers were always neat and traditional. She’d never seen ones this playful and
whimsical.
“I noticed you had something similar back at the cabin upstate, so I looked into how to make them. There was some willow wood out in the yard, so I gave it a try.”
Claudia hadn’t expected him to pick up on little details like that. It caught her off guard in a pleasant way.
Harold stepped up behind her, bracing his hands on either side of her against the wall, gently caging her in.
She could feel the warmth of his body against her back and went still for a moment.
He rested his chin on her shoulder and pressed a soft kiss to the side of her neck.
Feeling her tense up immediately, Harold quickly shifted gears. “They’re not exactly professional quality. Don’t look too close.”
His breath brushed lightly against her skin.
Claudia’s neck tingled, and she let out a light laugh. “They’re really charming. Thank you, Harold. I love them.”
Something about these quirky little unicorns would probably make her smile all day.
She tilted her head to glance back at him, and the moment she turned, Harold cupped her chin and kissed her from behind.
“Bedroom, or right here?” he murmured, grazing her earlobe with his teeth.
It felt like Harold had completely disarmed her.
“If we don’t hurry,” he added, his voice low, “I have a feeling Zander might come looking for you tonight.” /
Claudia knew he was probably right.
When she didn’t reply, Harold leaned down, swept her up into his arms, and carried her toward the bedroom. Claudia held on, her body pressed against his. He was radiating heat, and she felt like she might melt right into him. The silk nightgown he’d picked out for her was so thin it was barely there, offering hardly any barrier between them.
“Can you go a little easier…?” she whispered.
Last time had left her pretty sore.
Harold chuckled under his breath and lowered her onto the bed..

Before she could say another word, be flipped off the lamp, pulled open the nightstand drawer for what he needed, then gently took her ankles and drew her toward him before leaning over her.
“Easy isn’t really my style tonight. Want to take the lead instead?” He was clearly in a hurry, and his towel had already dropped to
the floor.
She couldn’t help thinking he’d become a whole different person.
Even as he said it, Harold held himself in check, letting her set the rhythm, staying restrained the entire time.
Claudia felt more comfortable that way, but it made things much harder for him.
“Not hurting anymore?” he asked quietly.
She shook her head, though her brow was still slightly furrowed.
Harold watched her, brushed a strand of hair from her forehead, and kissed the space between her eyebrows.
“You got me pretty good last night,” he said, a hint of a complaint in his tone. “Left a mark.”
Claudia replied softly, “You told me I could.”
Harold couldn’t hold back a low laugh before capturing her lips in a firm kiss.
He’d nipped the corner of her mouth slightly, and by now her skin was glistening with a light sheen of sweat.
And just as Harold had predicted, Zander’s faint cries drifted upstairs from below.
Harold covered her mouth gently.
He was unrestrained now, holding nothing back–true to who he was, what you saw was what you got, maybe even more intense.
Covering her mouth had been part of his plan all along.
Claudia gripped his side, almost able to feel each muscle flex under her touch.
“Mommy…”
Zander’s choked, tearful voice sounded just outside the door.
The nanny came hurrying up and quickly scooped him into her arms.
“Oh, sweetheart! How’d you slip away when I wasn’t looking? Keep this up and I’ll be getting my pay docked tomorrow..
Having been with the family a while, the nanny knew the situation well. She understood Zander’s story, and she knew what was going on tonight.
But Zander was already crying hoarsely. “I want Mommy.”
Harold carried Claudia out of the bathroom and laid her gently on the bed. “I’ll go settle him down. You try to rest
A satisfied, tender smile lingered on his face.

Put something on first…” Claudia reminded him softly.
There were still faint masks on his shoulder from the night before–courtesy of Claudia.
“Got it.” Harold slipped into a robe, tied it loosely, and headed for the door.
Claudia curled under the covers/
As Harold opened the door, he saw the nanny carrying Zander down the hall.
“Zander,” he called out.

He hadn’t wanted the evening interrupted either, but that boy clung to Claudia every time he saw her, crying like he had no dad. If they sent him back like this, he’d probably cry through the night.
No one would get any peace.
Hearing Harold’s voice, Zander lifted his head from the nanny’s shoulder.
“Daddy!” The surprise and delight in his tone were unmistakable.
Before the nanny could pass him over, Zander had already wriggled out of her hold and run toward Harold.
Harold bent down, picked him up, and brought him into the room.
By now, Claudia had changed into fresh pajamas and was propped against the headboard.
“Mommy!” Zander called out, bright–eyed
Harold set him on the bed and gave him a gentle warning. “No climbing on Mommy tonight, okay? Settle down and sleep, or it’s back to your own room.”
“Okay…” Zander lay still, wide, dewy eyes moving pleadingly between Harold and Claudia.
Claudia swatted Harold’s arm lightly. “Don’t scare him like that.”
