Verity:
"Jenna is turning twenty-three, and I want to celebrate her birthday with a masquerade ball for her," Lady Lucille spoke very fondly of Jenna.
She seemed like a very well-put-together young woman.
The only thing was that, for everything, she would look at Lady Lucille and only smile if Lady Lucille was smiling.
It was as if her life depended on what Lady Lucille was thinking or how Lady Lucille looked at her.
"Well, that’s great news. When is your birthday?" I asked Jenna, holding my little notepad.
I had arrived early, wearing brown pants, a white top, and a brown blazer.
I kept my hair in a loose bun, with strands framing my face.
Jenna smiled.
"The fifteenth of next month," she replied shyly.
She seemed genuinely fragile.
For a moment, I just watched her, and my smile started to fade.
Not because she annoyed me, but because there had been a time when I was just like her.
I suddenly felt so scared for her.
I had been like her before, and it was not a pleasant journey.
Then I shook myself back to reality.
I mean, I was nobody. She was related to the alpha king brothers.
Of course, her innocence would be protected.
But in my heart, I truly hoped she would never have to go through anything because of her innocence.
"Well, then I’ll prepare the best event for your birthday. But I’d suggest not keeping the birthday celebration and the ball on the same night. It would become a little too much. You know, a ball usually isn’t just about one person. People will naturally start looking for their mates too. I know because balls are more effective on a full moon night."
I paused as I checked the calendar on my phone.
"Your birthday will have to be readjusted accordingly," I said, watching Jenna turn to look at Lady Lucille.
Lady Lucille was sitting on the bed with her hands folded over her belly, looking very smug.
To be honest, I knew she was supposed to be a very big pawn in my game.
She was an arrogant woman.
I didn’t like women like her.
They usually saw other girls as tools for their grandsons or sons, and I hated that.
But at the moment, since I could tell she didn’t like Gigi, it was like my enemy’s enemy was my friend.
"What do you suggest?" Lady Lucille asked me, and I adjusted in my seat.
I knew about these things because I used to help people by baking and cooking for their events, so I often stayed close to the event manager.
Then, after everything happened, I took classes and earned certificates in event management.
So I knew what I was talking about.
"How about we celebrate her birthday next month like normal? Then, a month later, we can plan a grand ball for her. It’ll be spring too, and spring balls are usually very beautiful," I said, watching the old woman zone out.
I could tell Jenna liked the idea.
