Verity:
"That’s a really odd question to ask someone," I responded before quickly adding, "No, he doesn’t."
I didn’t want Roman to get in trouble just yet.
I was planning to make very good use of him.
As long as he was in the picture, the brothers weren’t going to openly take me.
I didn’t want things to turn bitter between us.
As far as they knew, I had a boyfriend, and that gave me a valid reason to push them away.
"Yeah, you were admitted to the hospital the other day," he said again, making me realize traveling with Ragnar was difficult because he pried so much information out of whoever rode with him.
"Yeah, I had food poisoning," I mumbled, slowly sliding back to the edge of the seat as I looked out the window.
I heard him let out a quiet laugh.
It sounded more like a sarcastic scoff.
"And there you go, hiding in your shell."
I turned to him the moment I heard that.
"I’m not hiding," I replied, sounding offended.
"You know what’s a coincidence?" he said, making my heart beat faster.
Why the fuck had I agreed to come with him?
And why the fuck did he have to make it so fucking difficult to deal with?
"That an old man we were going to visit was also admitted there."
As he continued speaking, I realized he had all the information about my hospital visit that day.
Literally everything.
"Yeah, I brought him in and paid his bill."
Before he could say anything else, I chose to tell him myself, acting as though it wasn’t a big deal.
"Uh-huh," Ragnar murmured.
I slowly settled back into place and turned to look at him.
"He is the same man who was supposed to have the footage of Oliver’s attack."
I decided to keep telling the truth.
I already knew he had information, so lying would only make things worse for me.
"And what business did you have with him?" he asked, his fingers twitching slightly. It drew my attention to all the rings he was wearing.
One held a blue sapphire set in silver.
Another had a strange metallic black stone with white and red sparkles embedded in it.
It was an overall very unusual ring.
He wore another one with a beautiful green stone.
"I visited him to find out if he had the footage."
I told him the truth.
"He told me he didn’t have it," I said with a sigh, looking down.
"And why would you go ask for the footage?" he asked again, his voice calm.
I hated every time he acted as though he’d caught me in a lie.
"Because I was attacked by that person and left in pain in my own home. So yeah, I wanted to know who it was. I wanted to take matters into my own hands for my own safety and protection because I realized I was on my own."
I’m not sure why I became so emotional, but by the time I finished speaking, tears shimmered in my eyes.
I quickly blinked them away before turning my head toward the window.
This time, I didn’t turn my whole body.
I stayed where I was, my back resting against the seat.
