Jenna:
I was miserable.
It felt as though I’d lost Theodore.
Ever since that day, even when we crossed paths, he wouldn’t look at me.
I was already confused.
On top of that, he was supposed to leave that night.
At least I knew that after his meeting, he’d be heading back to his hotel room.
Then, after everything that had happened with Verity, my phone beeped just as our conversation ended.
I checked it.
It was Theodore.
A smile spread across my face as I opened the message.
I’d barely finished reading it when he deleted it.
Luckily, I’d read it in time.
He was asking if we could meet that night.
But then why did he delete it?
I watched the soup begin to boil, thin wisps of steam curling up from the pot, as I unlocked my phone to text him back.
Me: Why did you delete the text?
I set my phone down on the counter, my gaze lingering on the simmering soup until it vibrated a moment later.
Theodore: Because I know you’ll start making excuses, and it’ll just ruin my mood.
I let out a quiet sigh and shook my head, clutching my phone tightly.
Me: No, of course not. I’ll come across the world for you. Just say the words, please.
I knew how reckless it sounded.
Leaving the house in the middle of the night to meet him in the woods was terrifying and dangerous.
But I wanted him to believe I was serious, that I would come if he asked.
My phone buzzed again.
Theodore: Fine, then. I want to meet at our regular place.
A smile tugged at my lips despite everything. At least he missed me.
At least he wasn’t completely over me.
I had to make him love me again.
Even if there was the smallest trace of resentment left over my past actions, I had to make sure I erased every one of his complaints tonight.
Me: Of course. We’ll meet tonight. Just send me the time.
Still smiling, I turned back to the stove. The soup was ready.
I switched off the heat and carefully ladled it into a bowl for Lady Lucille.
As I finished, another message arrived.
Theodore had sent the time along with the rest of the details.
I arrived at my spot and immediately started looking around.
Theodore still had some time before he arrived.
I checked my phone and realized he was going to be ten minutes late.
At least that gave me enough time to get started.
I wanted to put all of his complaints to rest today.
I quickly walked over to the water’s edge and sat down. I took off my maid costume.
It felt incredibly strange doing this.
I mean, I had never imagined I’d be doing something like this in the open.
Even wearing clothes like these in my own room used to make me feel embarrassed.
