Verity:
"So, you’ll sit here but won’t open the door?"
As he spoke, pointing toward the broken door, his expression shifted.
He had finally realized I couldn’t get up.
Without saying another word, he turned and quietly closed the door behind him.
Of course, he’d already broken the inner latch when he forced the door open, but the key lock was still intact.
Then he reached for it and slowly turned the key.
My heart shot straight into my throat.
As soon as he locked the door, he turned around and rolled his shoulders back.
I remained frozen where I was.
Even the slightest movement sent a sharp, electric pain racing through my entire body.
My damp hair was spread around me, spilling over my robe.
A few strands clung to my cheeks and forehead.
Then he started walking toward me.
There was something strangely calm about the way he moved.
Once he was only a few feet away, he stopped before slowly crouching down in front of me, almost as though he were striking a pose for a photograph.
He settled onto the balls of his feet, resting his elbows on his thighs as he pressed his fingertips together, forming a small pyramid.
"So—did you fall down?" he asked softly, his voice carrying a strange mix of mockery and mystery.
I only parted my lips, letting out the breath I’d been holding.
"Hm, you can’t move?" he asked, tilting his head.
I’d never seen Ragnar speak to me like this before.
He was usually either strictly professional or openly hateful.
This was different.
And I wasn’t ready for it.
"So," he murmured, trailing off as he gently rubbed his index finger beneath his chin, his head moving slightly with the motion.
"Hm. Where’s the pain?" he asked.
His tongue briefly swept across his upper teeth before disappearing behind his lips again.
"It’s— in my back," I uttered, not moving a single muscle.
"Is it that bad?" he asked.
There still wasn’t much concern in his voice.
That same mysterious calmness lingered in his tone.
"I can’t move a single muscle."
Then I closed my eyes because that was all I could do.
My eyes and tongue were the only parts of me I could still move as I answered him.
"Right," he nodded. "So, what was that forbidden phrase you were talking about?"
The question caught me off guard.
As he spoke, he casually scratched his temple with his index finger before lowering his hand again.
Then he tilted his head, deepening his gaze on me.
"Are you for real?" I asked softly, trying to shift my body.
The moment I moved, pain shot through me.
"No. I was just thinking. What was that phrase?" he continued.
Honestly, it was pretty devastating because this wasn’t the first time he’d done something like this.
The realization made me grunt, though I barely moved.
"So every time I’m in pain, you use that moment to teach me a lesson?" I uttered softly, reminding him that he’d left me alone in pain at my house before.
He gave a small nod before placing both hands on the floor and leaning toward me.
Instantly, I tried to scoot back.
"Ah!"
I screamed as pain ripped through my body.
My fists clenched in the air as though I could somehow force myself not to move.
I guess he finally realized he’d scared me because he immediately pulled back.
One hand remained on the floor while one knee stayed beneath him and the other was raised, his forearm resting across it.
"Okay, calm the fuck down," he muttered under his breath, slipping back into his usual cold demeanor.
